PDC And Solarvest Empower Penang’s Sustainability Agenda Through The Provision Of Clean Energy Solutions

Batu Kawan, 03 August 2023 – The Penang State Government’s premier development agency, Penang Development Corporation (“PDC”), via its subsidiary, PDC Nusabina Sdn Bhd (“PDC Nusabina”), and clean energy expert, Solarvest Holdings Berhad (“Solarvest” or the “Group”), has today announced the successful completion of the installation of 3.1 megawatt-peak (“MWp”) solar photovoltaic (“PV”) panels and building-integrated photovoltaic (“BIPV”) panels at the rooftop and carport (the “Solar Power System” of the “System”) of Marelli Automotive Lighting Malaysia Sdn Bhd’s (“Marelli”) manufacturing plant in Batu Kawan Industrial Park, Penang. The project completion ceremony was officiated by Yang Berhormat Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, the Chief Minister of Penang.

The Solar Power System was developed under Solarvest’s solar financing programme, Powervest, which enables businesses to adopt clean energy with zero initial capital outlays. PDC Nusabina served as an investor of the Solar Power System through Powervest. This aligns with PDC’s vision of spearheading Penang’s transformation into a green economy, as outlined in the Penang Green Agenda 2030 (“PGA 2030”).

Meanwhile, Solarvest took on the role of the engineering, procurement, construction, and commission (“EPCC”) provider for the installation of the Solar Power System. The System is anticipated to generate 4.4 GWh (“gigawatt-hours”) of clean energy annually, enabling Marelli to offset 2,410 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum.

Chief Minister of Penang, Yang Berhormat Tuan Chow Kon Yeow (曹观友) said, “Through this collaborative effort with Solarvest to develop the Solar Power System for Marelli, we aim to shape an environmentally conscious industrial landscape in Penang. By promoting zero carbon pollution and reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based energy, we are advancing our sustainability-led development agenda toward new heights. Our goals include empowering local manufacturing industries with green innovations, fostering the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (“ESG”) practices across sectors, and positioning Penang as ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’. With that, we are dedicated to leading the charge towards a greener, more advanced, and progressive Penang, making a positive contribution to Malaysia’s clean energy landscape as a whole.”

Chief Executive Officer of PDC, Yang Berbahagia. Dato’ Aziz bin Bakar said,” At PDC, we have been entrusted by the Penang State Government for the past decades to lead the planning and implementation of comprehensive development strategies, aimed at increasing employment opportunities, and improving the quality of life for the people of Penang. This Solar Power System project aligns perfectly with our commitment to spearheading socio-economic growth and promoting sustainable development. By embracing clean energy and driving the transition towards renewable sources, this solar project will not only contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions but also pave the way for a more environmentally conscious and prosperous Penang. It serves as a catalyst for growth, fostering a greener future while uplifting the socio-economic well-being of the people we proudly serve. As a sign of PDC’s seriousness and commitment in leading the green energy agenda, PDC has established a dedicated subsidiary namely Solar Voltech Sdn Bhd (“Solar Voltech”). With that, it is believed that the execution of the green energy agenda will be smoother and meet the expectation of the State Government and investors as clients.”

Executive Director and Group Chief Executive Officer of Solarvest, Mr. Davis Chong Chun Shiong (张俊雄) said, “We are delighted to join forces with PDC and Marelli in contributing to Penang’s sustainability goals. The successful completion of this project propels us closer to PGA 2030 and serves as a testament to Solarvest’s capabilities in the clean energy industry. Our efforts in promoting clean energy adoption among commercial and industrial (“C&I”) players have been fruitful, with Powervest recording a tender book of approximately 600MWp for this segment. As a dedicated decarbonisation partner, we eagerly look forward to building upon Solar Power System’s success and fostering more collaborative efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”).”

EVP & President of Marelli’s Automotive Lighting & Sensing division, Mr. Sylvain Dubois said, “At Marelli, we are on a sustainability journey, partnering with customers and suppliers to address environmental priorities, as a responsible player of the automotive sector. For us, sustainability is a key aspect, and we are fully committed to contributing to the carbon-neutrality of our operations by 2030, heavily anchored on clean electricity. We are actively working toward net‑zero commitments for our operations and supply chain no later than 2045.”
