Kuching, 7 June 2023 – Solarvest Borneo Sdn Bhd (“Solarvest Borneo”), a subsidiary of the clean energy expert, Solarvest Holdings Berhad, has today launched their Smart Solar PV and Green Hydrogen Testbed (“Testbed”) with the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (“CENTEXS”) and Huawei Technology (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (“Huawei Malaysia”) as an initiative to develop the clean energy industry in the Borneo region.

YAB Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated the launching ceremony held at CENTEXS, in conjunction with the 2-day Green Energy Symposium Sarawak 2023 (“GESS”). 

The Testbed is developed, built, and operated by a team of Sarawakian talents, which showcases a total installed capacity of 425 kilowatt-peak (“kWp”) with 780 solar panels. It also stands as the largest solar system ever deployed in Sarawak.

Integrated with battery storage systems, the Testbed offers the flexibility to operate in a hybrid mode, both on and off the grid. It can be powered entirely by an on-site solar system to generate green Hydrogen through electrolysis, which can then be utilized to power the 5G telecommunication system through a fuel cell that harnesses the chemical energy of hydrogen to produce electricity.

Through the implementation of solar-to-hydrogen microgrid systems, the Testbed is designed to facilitate a better understanding of the challenges and requirements involved in deploying solar and battery energy storage systems in green hydrogen production. By exploring various use cases for green hydrogen adoption, the Testbed will act as a catalyst for further research and innovation, ultimately promoting the scalability of green hydrogen technology in Sarawak and the region.

Director of Solarvest Borneo, Mr. Leon Liew Chee Ing (刘骐英) said, “As envisioned by the Sarawak Government to transform the State into a major player in the hydrogen economy by 2027, we hope the Testbed can serve as an industry reference for future initiatives in green hydrogen production.”

“Sarawak is poised to have the first large-scale green hydrogen production ready for export by 2027. We are committed to supporting the State in achieving its aspiration to become a regional green energy powerhouse as outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (“PCDS2030”),” Mr. Leon commented.  

Chief Executive Officer of CENTEXS, Tuan Haji Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman said, “The launch of the Green Energy Lab in January 2023 was a huge success and acts as an important nucleus to equip our local talents with relevant hands-on training in the clean energy field. The solar-hydrogen testbed serves as a valuable platform for upskilling and training on the various use cases of green hydrogen adoption, benefiting not only Sarawakians but the entire community. Through the testbed, we can develop training programmes for our students and foster digital talent in the fields of solar, energy storage, and green hydrogen.

“Moreover, the inclusivity of our approach extends beyond Sarawakians, in which our training courses are registered under the Malaysia Human Resource Development Corporation’s Claimable Courses Scheme. This inclusive approach ensures that individuals from all backgrounds can participate and benefit from the educational opportunities provided by the testbed and training programs.”

This collaboration is a part of Solarvest’s 5-Year Strategic Roadmap to transform into a regenerative clean energy expert.
