Xbox boss Phil Spencer has released a new blog post detailing plans stating Call of Duty will join Xbox game pass, along with other Activision Blizzard franchises, following today’s announcement from the UK Competition and Markets Authority that it will look into the agreement in detail.

As you might have expected, Call of Duty, along with Diablo and Overwatch, will become available through Xbox Game Pass, Spencer said, if and when Microsoft’s $68 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard is completed.  Spencer also ensured that Xbox is committed to making the same version of Call of Duty available on PlayStation on the same day the game launches elsewhere, meaning PlayStation users don’t have to worry about not getting the game.

This morning, CMA wrote that Activision games, and in particular Call of Duty, are important and capable of fundamentally changing the success of competing gaming platforms, such as PlayStation. The CMA expressed concern over the continued availability of Call of Duty on PlayStation and that, after the merger, Xbox could potentially use its ownership of the franchise to harm the competition a great deal by offering it through its subscription service.

While Phil Spencer’s blog doesn’t mention the UK CMA by name, it does offer a good answer to the concerns raised in today’s news about its ongoing work with regulators. He states the following:

We will continue to work with regulators in a spirit of transparency and openness as they review this acquisition. We respect and welcome the difficult questions that are asked. Today’s gaming industry is strong and dynamic. Industry leaders, including Tencent and Sony, continue to expand their vast and extensive game libraries, as well as other entertainment brands and franchises, popular with gamers across the globe. world. We believe a thorough review will show that the combination of Microsoft and Activision Blizzard will benefit the industry and gamers alike.

Microsoft president Brad Smith stated that Sony, as the industry leader, is concerned about Call of Duty, but Microsoft will be committed to making the same game available on both Xbox and PlayStation on the same day and that what Microsoft wants is for more people to have more access to games, not less
