IT Specialist (Part time job)

Position This new position will consolidate the majority of GEM’s IT tasks into one role. The IT Specialist will provide high-touch support for GEM’s fully remote staff as the primary contact for creating new accounts, answering technical questions, and troubleshooting occasional issues. They will take responsibility for frequent updates to our website and work closely with the Operations Manager on expanding our cybersecurity infrastructure. Our staff is global and 100% remote. Staff members have freedom to select the type of work devices they prefer we purchase for them and/or use their own devices for work, leading to a great deal of variety in the types of technology used within GEM. We are seeking someone who is able to help develop clearer policies on technology while also embracing the complexity of our systems, providing stellar support based on individual needs. This is a part-time role (24 hours/week) with flexible work hours. We are open to considering a variety of work schedules that balance staff support needs with your preferences. The Challenge According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing. About Global Energy Monitor Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to  The Wall Street Journal.  GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others. Location GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role. Position Summary and Duties Information Technology: Manage user accounts and admin settings for Google Workspace, Asana, Slack, Zoom, 1Password, and other organizational software. Provide full range of remote technical support for 85-person staff, including account creation, password resets, and troubleshooting on Macs and PCs. Recommend equipment standards and approve equipment requests from staff. Recommend and implement new projects and areas for IT improvement. Develop and organize IT-related documentation for staff reference. Website: Coordinate with program and communications staff on routine website changes and additions. Maintain and update WordPress website, including regular updates to the pages for each of our Trackers. Maintain website integrations, including data flows to Mailchimp and internal data dashboards. Manage functionality of connected data dashboards in Google Sheets. Manage accounts for domain and website hosting. Assist with implementation of new website to replace current version. Cybersecurity support: Monitor cybersecurity metrics and indicators; review staff reports of phishing and other threats. Monitor metrics in 1Password and work with staff to update weak/compromised passwords. Recommend cybersecurity improvements to organizational systems. Collaborate with Operations Manager on new cybersecurity-related policies and systems implementation. Assist with incident response planning. General Operations support: Miscellaneous tasks and projects if/as needed and capacity allows, possibly including: Online research GEM Wiki support Compliance tasks Support development of knowledge base Education & Experience Applicants who tailor their resume and cover letter to these requirements will be prioritized. The following experience and skills are required for this position: Customer service orientation with 2+ years in a technical support or customer service role. Experience providing technical support and making website updates. Ability to navigate new software systems, guide staff in doing so, and troubleshoot technical issues. Familiarity with common cybersecurity concepts relevant to an organization our size (80+ staff). Fluency in English; ability to explain technical issues clearly in written and verbal formats. The following experience and skills are desired for this position: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or Computer Science. 2+ years providing technical support in a remote-first, fully remote, or bring your own device environment. Familiarity with Mac and Windows operating systems. High level of proficiency with MS Excel / Google Sheets. Experience managing Google Workspace, Slack, Asana, 1Password, Mailchimp and/or VPN software. Experience implementing cybersecurity safeguards. Pay and Benefits This is a part-time, 24 hours per week work-from-home position. The pay rate is $38.51 per hour.
