Job Description

Powerplant Engineer Spring 2024 Internship- Remote

The Powerplant Engineering Teams work within the Technical Operations Department and coordinate engine and Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) maintenance requirements with pertinent Departments and Field Service Engineers. In addition, they coordinate with powerplant manufacturers, like CFM, as well as engine Maintenance Service Providers concerning technical, maintenance, and operational problems. Engineers also evaluate engineering document policies and procedures to determine if changes are needed. All engine maintenance, both on-wing and off-wing, is directed and authorized by Powerplant Engineering.

As an Intern, you can expect to:

  • Join Southwest as a Spring 2024 Intern, with a 12-week internship lasting from January 30th through April 19th.
  • Work fully remotely, with opportunities to connect with your Team and other workgroups virtually and potential to travel to visit our Dallas, TX Headquarters.
  • Dedicate a minimum of 24 hours each week to your internship responsibilities and tasks, up to 40 hours a week. We recommend checking your spring schedule now to ensure availability.
  • Receive an hourly pay of \(22 and receive a one-time, \)500 stipend on your first paycheck.
  • Receive free, unlimited travel privileges for yourself.
  • Interns will receive any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship.

Note: There is a limited group of states or localities ineligible for Employees to regularly perform their work off-site. Those ineligible locations are Alaska, California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Powerplant Engineer Intern duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Work on various size engineering projects in a maintenance or operations environment.
  • The Intern will be utilized as an entry-level engineer and may get hands-on experience with aircraft under supervision.
  • Assist with special projects and events as requested.

Basic Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.
  • You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process.

Education

  • Progress towards degree with a major/minor in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aviation Maintenance Science, or other Engineering-related degree.
  • Minimum Sophomore status. May not have an undergraduate graduation date of December 2023 or prior, unless already enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program at the time of application.
  • To be eligible you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student as defined by your university at the time of application.
  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application.

Experience

  • Work experience in an Aviation/Aerospace environment preferred.
  • Previous Work or Internship experience in an engineering related role is preferred.
  • Participation in Aviation/Aerospace organizations and clubs preferred.
  • Completion of 9 hours of Engineering-related coursework is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications.
  • An understanding of how to write technical documents/reports.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of current Engineering drawings and software to create them is preferred.
  • Basic understanding and knowledge of maintaining the aircraft structure, avionics, aircraft performance, systems, avionics, interiors, and powerplant is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Work Style & Abilities

  • Must possess excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and the willingness to function as part of a team.
  • Ability to multi-task and complete assignments with tight deadlines.
  • Good oral and written communication skills required.

Time Commitment and Pay

  • Required: Part-Time 24-40hrs a week
  • Must maintain a consistent weekly schedule during normal business hours at a max of 8hrs per day and no fewer than 24hrs per week
  • Program Dates: January 30th - April 19th, 2024
  • \(22 per hour + \)500 one-time stipend paid on first paycheck
