Environment Writer (Part time job)

Environment is looking for part-time writers! This position is ideal for anyone who deeply cares about climate issues, is knowledgeable about environmental science, stays up-to-date on the latest climate news & trends, knows what kind of content Gen Z wants to see, and has an immense desire to use our platform for social good. Preference will be given to candidates who already have a background in environmental science and examining data.

As an Environment Writer, you’ll have the ability to create impactful content, including current events, spreading awareness on important climate issues, connecting pop culture to larger environmental topics, shedding light on marginalized groups disproportionately affected by the climate crisis, and more. The ideal candidate should be able to explain environmental topics in a way that helps our Gen Z audience understand these issues & why they should care.

Intersectionality is an important aspect of the content we create at Environment. While this role involves writing environmental content, Environment Writers will also be expected to connect environmental issues to other topics like feminism, identity, racism, pop culture, mental health, human rights, etc. (i.e. How is the Flint water crisis an example of environmental racism? Why is fast fashion both a climate issue and feminist issue?) This intersectional lens is crucial to this role, and we strongly value the importance of viewing the climate crisis as an issue that is not isolated, but systemic.

Some topics may be time-sensitive; in that case, you’ll be expected to cover them in a timely manner. Environment Writers will also write evergreen content (pieces that are continually relevant and not time-sensitive), which comes with more flexibility.

Here are a few examples of environmental news pieces:

  • The ozone hole is healing.
  • A new undercover SHEIN investigation found that…
  • These two fossil fuel protestors threw a can of soup on Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers.”

Here are some examples of evergreen environmental pieces:

  • SHEIN pushes out between 2,000 and 10,000 items every day.
  • How TikTok promote overconsumption.
  • How lawns might be harming the environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Write 6-10 content pieces per week comprising a mix of pitches and assignments.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest issues, news and current events pertaining to environmental issues.
  • Keep up with viral environmental trends, social issues, news, and discourse that Gen Z cares about.
  • Cover climate news stories quickly, ideally within a few hours
  • Create impactful environmental content you care about, from current events to culture.

You will…

  • You will gain the ability to communicate effectively through concise and informative content.
  • You will have your news writing published to millions of people.
  • You will have the opportunity to create content that raises awareness and action.
  • You will contribute to creating a more diverse and equitable media landscape.

The Nitty Gritty:

⏲️ You will write 6-10 posts/week content pieces each week for our platforms. We estimate this will take around 20-25 hours weekly.

📆 Position length: 2-month trial, option to extend; contract to be renewed if mutual fit in 6 months.

💸 Position is paid at an hourly rate based on your location! NY & CA range: \(15-\)25/hour.
