Philips Bluetooth Boombox Speaker PX840T Review: Discover the Pros and Cons

A boombox is a very retro piece of tech. They had their time in the sun in the early nineties to mid-2000s. They used to be really popular way back when, but when portable speakers came out, the market for boomboxes started to dwindle, and a lot of people wanted to have speakers they could carry anywhere with them.

However, boomboxes are making a comeback into the pop-culture zingiest, and that’s something that may seem long overdue because there is a market for it and a lot of people want to get that super deep base that boomboxes brought, and you can’t get that with a portable speaker.

A lot of the more recent boomboxes now come with a lot of cool features and Bluetooth connectivity too. So, in this article, I will be reviewing the Philips Bluetooth Boombox Speaker PX840T to see if boomboxes are actually making a resurgence or if it is all one big nostalgia trip.

Design – Philips Bluetooth Boombox Speaker PX840T

The Philips Bluetooth Boombox Speaker PX840T really has this old-school design with some new-age finishes and touches here and there, but it is still big, so you can still expect those heavy bass drops from the subwoofers. It’s got a nice angular look to it, especially on the sides, where you can see the whole old-school cut-out to it.

Looking at the front of it and you can still see a lot of those old-school button layouts that you can mess around with to get it just sounds right and it also got the standard playback functions to it, and oh, before I forget to mention this, it’s also got that old school LCD, and it’s got a CD player at the top so you can see that Philips was really going for that old school design language.

However, the speakers on it do glow, so that’s cool and nice to see that they also intend to add some of the newer design choices from the portable speaker age.

Performance and Sound Quality

In terms of raw sound quality and output, this boombox is really taking me back in time with this while also letting me know I’m still in the present at the same time.

If you don’t know what I mean, just let me explain, so the base is very impressive because there is a lot of space for the sound to project from and produce a lot of high-level sound along with very impressive old-school kicks, which are quite incredible, to be honest, and the main thing to it.

The sound levels, and I got to tell you, this boombox is loud, and I’m not talking about portable loud. I’m saying stadium-level loud, and I know that might seem like a bit of an exaggeration, but I’m just trying to drive home how loud it really is.

Along with being loud, it’s also quite clear but not as tight as some portable ones but still clear.

Build Quality

The Philips PX840T Boombox is built very well, and it is made of very quality meshes of plastic and metal going through the whole build of the speaker. Nothing feels cheap, and everything feels well done; the attention to detail in every piece is quite impressive.

Along with that gold finish in the inlays of the speaker was a nice touch. All the materials are lightweight, making it easy to carry along wherever you are going with minimal fuss or stress.

Controls and Functionality

Everything functions well, and as expected, there aren’t any issues with the buttons or the inputs. The buttons don’t feel fussy or cheap. The main functions all work well, and the button layout is very intuitive.

All the playback options work well; the rewind, fast-forward, and pause are all simple and easy to use, and the CD eject and swap buttons work as expected.

Features

  • Stream music wirelessly via Bluetooth from your smartphone
  • USB Direct for MP3 music playback
  • Play MP3-CD, CD, and CD-R/RW
  • FM/MW (AM) stereo tuner
  • Audio-in for easy portable music playback
  • The speaker lights up to really liven up the party and get things going.

Price

The Philips PX840T Bluetooth Boombox Speaker is available for around $169, which is a fair price for what you are getting. It is a very well-built boombox with some great features and very good sound quality.
