Phone cases have become a staple component of most of our lives. They’re a justifiable purchase, especially since your smartphone is probably your most-used device and potentially the most expensive. However, they haven’t always been as stylish (or as practical) as they are today.

Believe it or not, the very first phone case didn’t look like much of a phone case at all. In fact, it looked more like a briefcase, a far cry from the iPhone 14 pro max cases we’re used to today. This is because phones used to be much larger than they are today. Rather than fitting right in your pocket, they needed their own carry case! Thankfully, times have changed, but these cumbersome carry cases are what started it all thirty years ago.

By the turn of the century, phone cases had advanced somewhat beyond the necessity of a carry case. Now they were more compact, but they certainly weren’t pocket-sized. Instead, they needed their own holster, like some Y2K cowboy. They didn’t catch on quite as well as the manufacturers may have hoped, but they certainly had their moment. 

Classic Plastic

Finally, towards the start of the 2000s, plastic phone cases started to hit the scene. They were protective and colorful, providing phone owners with the security they needed. They weren’t as sophisticated as the kinds we have today (and certainly weren’t good for the environment), but phone cases had to start somewhere, and this is where modern evolution really began. 

Novelty Designs 

It wasn’t long before manufacturers caught onto the idea of a phone case being a form of self-expression, so designers got creative. A near-endless stream of graphics, patterns, and shapes started to infiltrate the market, and before long you could find just about anything you wanted to decorate your device with. In recent years, even Vogue has recognized the fashion power that cases possess, and the market shows no sign of slowing down. 

Magnetic Charging and Much More

It isn’t just creative designs that make phone cases exciting. They have an enormous array of practical benefits, even beyond keeping your phone protected. Magnetic and wireless charging is a trend that has recently taken the market by storm, but additions such as camera lens enhancers and prop-up stands have also made their mark. These days, your phone case can act as a wallet, tripod, and protective layer for your device, all in one.

The Future of Phone Cases is Bright

It’s hard to accurately predict where the world of phone cases will go next, but there’s no denying the innovation that has brought us to the present day. Phone cases have come a long way since the days of clunky carry cases. We don’t know what’s next, but we’re excited to find out!
