Zhiyun G60 LED Light Review

The biggest issue I find right now when making videos for the channel is space and for the most part, it’s my lighting setup that’s causing the issues. My Godox SL60W and soft box is massive, clunky, and a pain to use. But I think I’ve found a solution. And that’s the tiny, portable yet professional LED light, the Zhiyun G60.

The Zhiyun G60 is an almost pocket-sized studio light that is pretty much the size of a Rubix cube and is small enough to fit in my hand. It’s extremely lightweight and can produce a pretty bright light for your video content creation. In the box, you get the light, a mini reflector, a Bowens mounting kit to use the light with larger softboxes, a small Zhiyun softbox, a dome diffuser to spread the light around a room and a power brick, though if you wanted this light can also be used with USB Type-C power too for PD fast charging which allows input power monitoring. But if you were to go this route, you will need to find a capable USB Type-C wall plug that can achieve the wattage needed for the light, otherwise, you won’t get full power or brightness. You also get a nice case too in this particular kit, to keep everything nice and neat and protected when carrying it around with you to different shoots.

The light itself is capable of generating up to 60 watts of power and has a Colour Temperature range of 2700K-6500K. To be a bit more specific, the colour rendering index is around 96 and the television light consistency index is around 97. Its illuminance sits at 2,367 Luz and this is at 6500K at 100% brightness, so it’s more than capable for the more professional film shoots, though if I’m being completely honest, I’m not sure that a studio is really Zhiyun’s target audience with this light. But saying that, some YouTube content now is definitely on par with some major studios in the world now. But because of its small size, it’s definitely a product that bedroom and enthusiast creators are going to use. Maybe even livestreamers too, to give them a nice key light.

On the base, there is an adjustable arm which has a 1/4-inch mounting thread so you can easily mount it to a light stand or even a tripod. I’ve had to use a tripod here for it because I haven’t got a light stand with that kind of fitting, and I’m not using the Bowens mount either in this video. I am only being lit from the 45-degree mark by the Zhiyun G60, and I must say it looks absolutely wicked. I am using it with the softbox and mesh cover to diffuse the light a bit further.

Around the back are two dials. The first will adjust the colour temperature between a cool and warm tone, and the second will adjust the brightness. They have a nice click when spinning, and feel very solid, and you can even press the dials in to set your brightness or colour temperature in increments. There is a partner app called the ZY Vega where you can adjust these settings using your phone connected via Bluetooth, rather than having to manually adjust the light dials. This is handy, especially if you’re like me who is sitting behind a desk filming videos like I am doing right now, and you’re not quite happy with the look of the footage.

The cooling system too is pretty unique, and this is the main reason this light can run so bright. It’s called a DynaVort Cooling System, and this tech is interesting because of the gyroscope built for its heat sinks and FOC fans. This equates to an operating temperature of around 10 to 40 degrees, and also a nice consistent light, and no cool-down periods.

Now I’m thoroughly impressed with the Zhiyun G60. So much so that I’m looking at replacing it as my full-time keylight in my studio. Sure it’s not as wide forming as the Godox, but still, I think it makes my videos look pretty decent, and I’m happy with the results. It gives me more space to work with and a more concentrated directional light as my key. Even for B-roll shots, it works well. For more information, head over to the Zhiyun website.
