Amazon Echo Show 5 Review : Echo Show 5 is the new member of Alexa-based Echo devices from Amazon. I received it last week, and till now I was exploring it.  It is a cool device and today in this article we are going to review Amazon Echo Show 5. Echo Show 5 belongs in the middle of Echo Spot and the original Amazon Echo Show so it will be fun to review it because it has something good and something missing. So let’s find out both.

Amazon Echo Show 5 Review

The Amazon Echo Show 5 is the smaller version of the Echo Show, It comes with a smaller 5″ display instead of 10.1″. Which of course makes it a bigger sibling of Echo Spot. It has a body that tapers backwards, and just behind the angled display, there is a speaker. The whole setup looks like a Smartphone placed in landscape mode on the table with support or kickstand. It Comes in two colour variants white and Black and it has a physical slider for covering the camera on the top which seems to be the best solution for most of the Spy related stuff these devices can do. The White version looks like 3D Printed stuff which is disturbing and doesn’t fit in the room very well, But there is no problem with the black one.

Amazon Echo Show 5 Display is a touch screen display which has a resolution of 960×480 pixels and 215ppi density with an aspect ratio of 2:1. For a device which will be placed on a desk the specs are fine. The display has dazzles/frames all around. At the top of the device or Above the display part, there are 3 switches/ buttons with a physical slider. Of these three buttons, one is for Mute Function and the other two are for Volume. The physical slider is there for covering the camera.

The Physical Switch in these devices is like your privacy in your own hand. It is a positive upgrade because in previous Echo devices disconnecting the camera was a software-based function. So having a physical cover blocking the camera is a more trust-able and safer option.

Behind the display, the entire back side of the device is covered with a cloth grille. As I already said, Behind the display and Underneath the cloth grille there is a 1.65-inch single speaker. Now, If you will compare it with Echo Spot you will find the speaker, its bass, and quality better but if you will compare it with Echo Show with 10W drivers with a passive radiator you will be dis-pointed. By the way, you can connect external speakers because it has an audio out jack along with a micro USB port and power input jack. You can also use a micro USB to Ethernet adapter if you don’t have WiFi access.

Maybe I missed something in this Amazon Echo Show 5 Review! Let me remember! Yes, Camera. The Amazon Echo Show 5 holds a 1MP Camera which is definitely an improvement over the Echo Spot’s VGA camera. The Camera can be used only for video calling to other Echo devices or phones running the Alexa app. The Picture quality is just fine.

After the Design and Specification, let’s move to the UI. It has the same processor as the Echo Spot so We expect the same performance from Amazon Echo shows 5, but it is not. The UI of the Amazon Echo Show 5 is Slow. It often takes a second to respond on a few menus. And More than a second in Changing the home screen background, and opening an App (maybe App is not the best word let’s say option).

If we talk about the positive side then there are several improvements and you will get more options than before. like Now you can set Background on the Homescreen. On the home screen, you will see a clock face, this clock face can be customized and there are a lot of options there now. Now at the home screen, you can also set it to show a randomized cycle (Slider) through other information, such as reminders, events, notifications and trending topics you as per your selection. You can also check the temperature and weather details on the home screen.

Similar to the other Echo devices having a display, You need to swipe down on the display to access the brightness adjustment panel, DND Switch, settings and the home button. By swiping from the right edge on the home screen, a Menu will appear with several options such as communication, smart home devices, recently played music, Prime Video content, alarms and routines. With the Communicate menu, you see your contacts and also call them. With Amazon Echo Show 5 you can make voice calls, video calls, Automatic Pickup Video Call (if allowed from the receiver end), voice messages, and you can make an Announcement, which lets you record a voice message, then it will be broadcast across all the Alexa devices in your home.

The Amazon Echo Show 5 does not have a smart hub built-in but it can interface with smart home devices that have their own smart hub. The Audio quality is not great and an additional drawback is that the Music Player also lacks some of the basic features. Like You have to use voice if you want to play something, You can’t just tap on a song from the list to play. By default, it shows the recently played music using voice.

The Video Option is better, you can access Prime Video service with categories like Amazon Originals, Prime movies, Prime TV shows, watchlist and more genre options. The good news is that you just have to tab on the show. Maybe they forget that it will have a Touch screen while building the Music Player. By the way, there’s no official YouTube Available in-built. For Youtube You have to use Amazon Silk or Mozilla Firefox browsers, Both are in-build. By the way, if you want a Smart home device with YouTube in-built then try Google’s Nest devices.

Now I want to Review Alexa, But I can’t.  Sorry about that, but I can’t. Alexa is grown up (improved) in all these years but it still does stupid things with Playing Music, sometimes so delicately like a teasing wife or GF. Music and Alexa behave like Husbands and Wives, No one knows when their behaviour goes weird. I live with my family and three-time in an hour it played something so weird that finally, I had to ask Alexa to stop. So I have fear, and I can’t.
