Futuristic Product Creation With Morphing Techniques

Detroit Engineered Products (DEP) is an Engineering Solutions and Product Development company. DEP transform the product development process associated with vehicle and powertrain systems. TimesTech interacted with Basant Sharma, Vice President at Detroit Engineered Products (DEP) to know about Twin technology, AI/ML innovation and much more.

Read the full interview here:

TimesTech: What are the products and services that are being offered by DEP’s engineering services and solutions?

Basant: Detroit Engineered Products (DEP) provides customers a one-stop solution for everything from Benchmarking, Design concepts, to Detailed design, Simulation, Testing, Prototyping and other developmental support services. DEP takes on the challenge of building a comprehensive solution that result in faster-time-to-market, irrespective of the various engineering hardships in the product development cycle. We provide unique solutions using our integrated CAE platform, DEP MeshWorks. With the robust features of MeshWorks, we promise futuristic product creation, especially with the application of morphing techniques that transform an existing design into a new shape and geometry. Additionally, for further optimization, we don’t need a traditional way; instead, we can increase performance directly by doing modifications in CAE models using parametric technologies.  Being a technology torch bearer & services expert, we support customers in product development segment by saving cost, time & effort.

TimesTech: How is Digital Twin Technology used in the manufacturing process, and what technologies are used?

Basant: Digital Twin, rather than doing a physical prototype and making an actual part, you are validating your manufacturing process or your virtual performance. A Digital Twin, also called a virtual twin, or simulated twin, is the virtual form of a real-world asset or process. They are built to exist along with the life of the product and help to optimize the real physical asset.

IoT and Digital Twin are two concepts that are intertwined. With the advancement of the Internet of Things, the digital twin process can now enable testing, analysis and predictions based on real-world scenarios rather than a set of assumptions, whereby the results of these tests will be accurate, saving time and money. The amount of data generated in digital twin methodology is enormous, and IoT has to keep up with the volume of data and analysis needed. On the other hand, Digital twin is crucial to the development of IoT, as IoT has to re-evolve to meet the rapidly growing standard of the Digital twin based on its accuracy, data capacities and sensing capabilities.

This can be analysed and real time feedback on performance, emission, and any other parameters you wish to track can be provided. It is particularly useful when the physical asset is in difficult to access locations or undergoing unmanned programs.

TimesTech: What are DEP’s most recent AI/ML analytics innovations?

Basant: Our development team is currently working on implementing some advanced AI methodologies that facilitate MeshWorks users during various development stages. With the implemented intelligence, additional insights will be provided to users on even minute impacts for any given use case of Morphing, CAE Process automation, etc. With all the uploaded data, the software will compute the necessary factors and provide the user with more clear results for better optimization using features and pattern recognitions.

TimesTech: Which of your software or simulation platforms is particularly popular in the Indian automotive industry, and why?

Basant: DEP MeshWorks has a large number of modules, and each one is in high demand. We have automated several complex workflows which are now readily available in the tool, or can be customized, which reduces the time for routine CAE workflows, and can be performed with no particular CAE experience. The use of parametric technology allows them to swiftly tweak their model into new concepts. MeshWorks also has custom tools available in it to address particular challenges in modeling and optimizing complex geometries like tires, plastics and packaging, which are very popular.

TimesTech: What are DEP’s plans moving forward?

Basant: There are a lot of internal and external factors that DEP is looking at. The most important thing DEP is looking at is ensuring customer success. Going above and beyond to ensure customer success is critical to a thriving business. Next would be investing in people and technology. You cannot be a technology company without making the right investments in people and technology. If the recession has taught us anything, it is the importance of a solid business continuity plan, which can ensure undisrupted customer service no matter what situation is thrown at you. Economic trends and technology adoption is a key area to be looked into as well as it directly affects companies.
