Hulu’s Animated Comedy Has a Secret Weapon

During the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, a review of the new season of Solar Opposites must recognize the importance of the writers and actors currently on strike. Without their labor, the series we are discussing would not exist. Now, let’s dive into the new season.

One cannot discuss the latest season of Solar Opposites without addressing the elephant in the room—the firing of co-creator and Justin Roiland, who voiced Korvo. Instead of replacing him with a soundalike, the creative team took a more innovative approach. Dan Stevens stepped in as the new voice of Korvo, and right from the start, fans were given an explanation. After Korvo accidentally gets stabbed in the throat with a dart, his replicant Yumyulack restores his voice with a ray, giving him a new British accent. Surprisingly, this change only enhances the series.

For those unfamiliar with Solar Opposites, it follows a family of plant-based aliens who crash-landed on Earth. The family consists of adults Terry and Korvo, and their replicants Yumyulack and Jesse. In Season 4, the family tries to live a more “human” life. Terry and Korvo work office jobs, Jesse hangs out with mean girls at school, and Yumyulack enjoys cigars in the teacher’s lounge. However, their attempts at normalcy quickly lead to sci-fi adventures, resulting in the show’s strongest season yet.

Stevens’s portrayal of Korvo captures his grouchy demeanor while nailing the comedic timing. This isn’t a case of a celebrity taking over a voice role; Stevens’s commitment to the series shines through. Although the change may be jarring at first, longtime fans will quickly get used to it. Solar Opposites Remains true to its established formula, building upon what has worked before while incorporating fan-favorite subplots like “The Wall” and “SilverCops” and taking them in new, exciting, and shocking directions.

The new season features plots ranging from Terry and Korvo attempting to bribe their boss for a ping-pong table to the family embarking on a road trip to an animal rescue with their unique Gooblers. There’s even the introduction of a potential new family member—a Flintstones-inspired Dino. The season takes us to an alternate universe of stock images, showcases invisibility, and explores what it means for aliens to become human. It’s safe to say that Season 4 won’t attract new fans, but why should it? The show remains faithful to its absurd and risqué humor, delivering the best season yet.

While Solar Opposites primarily focuses on the alien family, it’s the subplots that steal the show. The standout is The Wall—a structure filled with shrunken humans in Jesse and Yumyulack’s bedroom. The new season introduces Sister Sisto, a former nun turned cult leader who believes Jesse is their savior. The development of The Wall subplot is captivating, and it continues to improve as the series progresses. At times, viewers might even prefer these subplots over Terry and Korvo’s misadventures, especially since the season runs for 11 episodes, allowing for more exploration.

However, the season does encounter moments of repetition. While revisiting old plotlines like The Wooden City and featuring appearances from the Red Goobler can be fun, some elements feel redundant. Jesse and Yumyulack’s sibling rivalry, as well as Terry and Korvo’s “will they, won’t they” relationship, exhibit moments of repetition. Although these provide a surprising level of heart, the repeated jokes can become tiresome.

Despite these minor flaws, Solar Opposites remains one of Hulu’s finest original comedy series. With the addition of revived classics like Futurama and King of the Hill, as well as original shows like Koala Man, Solar Opposites stands out as a shining gem in Hulu’s animation library. Overall, the latest season offers the most entertaining episodes to date.

Rating: B

The Big Picture:
Solar Opposites Season 4 maintains its comedic and absurdist tone with the introduction of a new lead voice actor, Dan Stevens, who brings a confident British accent to Korvo. The subplots, particularly The Wall and the SilverCops, continue to be the series’ strongest aspects, surpassing other elements. While some plotlines may feel repetitive and rehashed, Solar Opposites remains one of Hulu’s top original comedy series, providing its most entertaining episodes yet. Don’t miss the Season 4 premiere on August 14, exclusively on Hulu.
