Billy Is Back for More Games

The Big Picture

  • Saw X, a prequel set between the first and second movies, brings back Billy the puppet, a chilling character known for delivering the deadly game rules.
  • Jigsaw, the mastermind behind the twisted games, punishes those who take life for granted by putting them in life-threatening traps.
  • The Saw franchise, created by Leigh Whannell and James Wan, became a Halloween tradition with films released every October from 2005 to 2010.

As the Saw franchise returns later this year with the upcoming Saw X, audiences will once again be subjected to the infamous question – do you want to play a game? This prequel, set between the first and second movies, marks the return of the deadly Jigsaw killer, portrayed by Tobin Bell, who last appeared in 2017’s Jigsaw. Following the spin-off film Spiral in 2021, featuring Chris Rock, fans are now gearing up for a new installment of twisted games, as revealed in a recently released image from the film.

The Saw franchise is known for its “games,” which place individuals in life-threatening situations designed to test their will to survive. The newly unveiled image showcases the franchise’s iconic mascot, Billy the puppet, a frightening doll on a tricycle who delivers the rules of the deadly traps to the victims. These games are devised by Jigsaw, played by Tobin Bell, a terminally ill man seeking to punish those who take life for granted. Jigsaw’s modus operandi is to let his victims essentially kill themselves. Tobin Bell reprises his role in this upcoming prequel, and the film’s synopsis sheds light on what to expect:

“It’s the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s final games. Set between the events of Saw I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. The infamous serial killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through devious, deranged, and ingenious traps.”

The Saw franchise was born in 2004, conceived by Leigh Whannell and James Wan, who have since become renowned figures in the horror genre. Their contributions extend beyond Saw, as they have also worked on the Insidious series, and Wan has been involved in directing and producing the Conjuring films. In the first Saw movie, Whannell stars as photographer Adam alongside Cary Elwes as Dr. Lawrence Gordon. The film’s iconic setup involves the two characters waking up in a room with chains, trapped with a presumed corpse, and being forced to play a game to secure their survival. Despite its modest $1.2 million budget, the film became a massive success for Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures, grossing $109.9 million and kick-starting the enduring franchise. From 2005 to 2010, new Saw movies were released every October, turning it into a Halloween tradition.

The tenth installment in the series, Saw X, is set to hit theaters on September 29, 2023, a month earlier than its original October 27 release date.
