Minister of State for Communications Responds to Airtel’s Complaint Against Reliance Jio in Rajya Sabha

Earlier this year, Airtel filed a Complaint with telecom regulator Trai against Reliance Jio, accusing them of offering predatory live TV channel offers with their JioFibre home broadband plans. Airtel claimed that these backup plans by JioFiber disrupt the DTH digital TV market, exhibit predatory pricing, and violate Trai’s NTO pricing regulations. Jio also provides home broadband services with access to content apps through a set-top box.

However, the telecom regulator has recently cleared Reliance Jio of these allegations. This information was disclosed by Minister of State for Communications, Devusinh Chauhan, in Parliament. Chauhan stated that Trai examined the complaint and response from Reliance Jio and concluded that their tariffs are not in violation of the tariff orders.

In response, Reliance Jio sent a counter letter to TRAI, urging them to caution Airtel against filing frivolous complaints. Reliance Jio dismissed Airtel’s allegations as a deliberate attempt to defame Jio’s consumer-friendly tariffs in order to protect their own interests.

According to Reliance Jio’s letter to Trai, their JioFiber backup tariff plans aim to connect consumers to fiber optics technology and do not include any subscription to OTT applications or broadcasting services. Airtel had claimed that offering a large number of live TV channels at a lower cost for broadband services is an act of predatory pricing and violates the TTO-1999 regulation.

Overall, Reliance Jio has been cleared of any wrongdoing by Trai, while Airtel’s complaints have been dismissed.
