30th Anniversary Of ‘Babylon 5’ Commemorated With Blu-Ray Release

As the cult ’90s sci-fi Series Babylon 5 approaches its 30th anniversary, fans will be delighted to know that the entire series, Babylon 5: The Complete Series, will be released on Blu-ray this December. This remastered edition, presented in high definition for the first time, showcases the groundbreaking special effects that made the show a technical marvel in its time.

Babylon 5: The Complete Series includes all 110 episodes of J. Michael Straczynski’s space opera masterpiece, which aired from 1994 to 1998. It also features the 1993 feature-length pilot, Babylon 5: The Gathering, which serves as an introduction to the series. Fans can now pre-order the Blu-ray set for $99.99 US, and it will be available on December 5, 2023.

What Is Babylon 5?

Babylon 5, created by the prolific TV writer Straczynski (known for The Real Ghostbusters, Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future, and the ’80s version of The Twilight Zone), stands out from other TV series of its time. Straczynski had the entire five-season story arc planned from the beginning, treating the show as a novel with each episode serving as a chapter. This approach was revolutionary, especially for a syndicated show that typically followed an episodic structure. The series features a talented ensemble cast, including Bruce Boxleitner, Bill Mumy, Andreas Katsulas, and Patricia Tallman. Set in the year 2257, the story revolves around Babylon 5, a space station considered the last hope for peace in the galaxy. It explores the coexistence of humans and various alien races while sinister forces conspire to ignite a galactic war. Despite not achieving huge ratings, Babylon 5 developed a loyal cult following due to its complex characters, mature themes, and groundbreaking use of the internet for interaction with fans. The series concluded in 1998 after five seasons, 110 episodes, and four TV movies. It also spawned two short-lived spin-offs: Crusade (set five years after the main series) and The Legend of the Rangers (which never progressed beyond the pilot stage). A reboot of the series is currently in development at the CW.

Exciting news awaits Babylon 5 fans. Apart from the Blu-ray release, a new CG animated feature called Babylon 5: The Road Home is on the horizon. Penned by Straczynski himself, this feature reunites the beloved characters from Babylon 5 and the surviving cast members. The trailer teases an adventure where Babylon 5 station commander John Sheridan (played by Boxleitner) travels through time, encountering familiar faces and confronting alternate realities. Fans can look forward to its release on Blu-ray, 4K, and video-on-demand on August 15.

Don’t miss the opportunity to own Babylon 5: The Complete Series, set to be available from online retailers on December 5. Pre-orders are now open. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on this iconic series.
