‘Oppenheimer’ Expenses Exceeded Initial Reports By A Significant Margin

A representative for the Film reached out to clarify that Nolan’s original quote was misreported. The director referred to the film being 180 minutes long, not costing $180 million to make.

We have already extensively discussed the highly anticipated new movie “Oppenheimer” directed by Christopher Nolan. However, recent events indicate that there is much more to talk about in the upcoming weeks. Following the departure of the main cast from the London premiere event due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Nolan spoke to Variety about the film’s budget, revealing that it cost significantly more than the original announcement.

On the red carpet, Nolan mentioned that the duration of “Oppenheimer” is comparable to “Avengers: Endgame.” He briefly discussed the movie’s premiere in Japan, which is particularly significant due to its sensitive subject matter—the atomic bomb attack during World War II. Nolan also hinted that the budget is still unconfirmed but mentioned that it exceeds the previously reported $100 million:

“The runtime is two minutes shorter than ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ so we cling to that. I said to [producer] Emma Thomas very early on that it’s going to be a three-hour film. I have to write a script that reflects that. That was our conversation with the studio. It’s a big story and needs a big talent. It’s a 180-page script and it’s a $180 million movie.”

How Does a Drama Become This Expensive?

Historical dramas are inherently expensive due to the costs associated with recreating a specific time period, including cars and costumes. However, “Oppenheimer” stands out because Nolan opted to hire an all-star cast to bring the story to life. This includes renowned actors such as Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Kenneth Branagh, and Cillian Murphy as the lead. Additionally, there is a substantial number of actors and extras who need to be paid, alongside the costs of their daily sustenance. Furthermore, a larger team results in a more expensive production, as seen in the end credits.

“Oppenheimer” also features two peculiar elements that contribute to its inflated budget. First, Nolan decided not to use CGI throughout the film, making production significantly more costly. Second, the movie was filmed with IMAX 70mm cameras, which presents challenges for exhibitors as the premiere date approaches.

“Oppenheimer” will debut in theaters on July 21. Below, you can watch our interview with Christopher Nolan:
