Embracer Group Announces the Launch of Five Lord of the Rings Games in the Next 2 Years

Embracer Group is currently working on the development of five Lord of the Rings games, according to their latest financial report. These games are expected to be released within the next two years, specifically during the upcoming financial year from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. In August, Embracer Group acquired the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit literary works by J.R.R. Tolkien, adding them to their extensive collection of over 800 properties.

While the briefing did not disclose the exact titles of these games, we are already aware of four of them that have been in development for some time. One of these games is The Lord of the Rings: Gollum from Daedalic Entertainment, which recently received a new release window indicating a launch before September of this year. Originally scheduled for a 2021 release, the game experienced multiple delays to ensure optimized performance at launch. These delays may have been influenced by fan criticism of the game’s outdated graphics. Publisher Nacon has announced an exclusive presentation featuring LOTR: Gollum, taking place on March 9, which hopefully indicates improved progress for the game.

Embracer Group stated in their financial report, “this acquisition has generated a lot of interest among both internal and external partners for the Lord of the Rings IP, across different media formats. There are currently five games in production by external partners, to be released in the financial year 2023/24.” Alongside Gollum, Free Range Games is working on The Lord of the Rings: Moria, a survival crafting and base-building game centered around the Dwarves’ quest to reclaim their lost home beneath the Misty Mountains. It is set to be released on PC sometime this year. Weta Workshop, the digital effects company that worked on the original movie trilogy, is developing a third untitled Middle-earth game, published by Private Division and expected to launch in fiscal year 2024.

The last game, potentially titled EA’s The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, is a mobile game focused on turn-based combat and features a wide roster of characters from the fantasy universe, along with “deep collection systems.” Limited details are available, but a press release suggests that the game may include in-game purchases, possibly resembling a gacha game like Genshin Impact. No information has been released about a fifth Lord of the Rings video game project.

The report also mentions the development of an externally produced movie. In November, Embracer Group closed down Onoma (formerly Square Enix Montréal) to shift their focus to PC and console releases, with some staff being relocated to Eidos-Montréal studio.
