King Arthur: The Outcast Before United Britain

The Winter King, a highly-anticipated Series adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles, is set to captivate audiences once again with its fresh take on Arthurian legend. In the series, Iain de Caestecker portrays Arthur Pendragon, an outcast who rises above his circumstances to become a renowned warrior and leader for Britain during a crucial period in its history.

Set in the 5th Century, The Winter King paints a portrait of a divided Britain under threat from the invading Saxons. Arthur, initially unloved and rejected as an exile and the illegitimate son of High King Uther (played by Eddie Marsan), must embrace his destiny as the hero the country needs. Uniting the tribes and persuading powerful individuals to join his cause will be a daunting task, but it is necessary for the survival of Britain and its future.

As showcased in the trailer, Caestecker’s portrayal of Arthur demonstrates both his skill with a sword and his political acumen. Alongside an engaging story and compelling characters, the series also boasts stunning landscapes that evoke the essence of Arthurian legend. Filmed in Wales and the West Country, the series faithfully captures the land that Arthur himself would have roamed.

A Talented Team Came Together to Bring The Winter King to Life

The challenge of adapting the Warlord Chronicles fell into the capable hands of Kate Brooke, the creator of Bancroft, and Ed Whitmore, a BAFTA-nominated writer known for Manhunt. Alongside their executive producer roles, the series is being produced by Sony Pictures Television’s Bad Wolf banner, known for their work on acclaimed series like Doctor Who, His Dark Materials, and A Discovery of Witches. Noteworthy director Otto Bathurst, a BAFTA winner, is at the helm of the ten-part series, having also directed Robin Hood in 2018 and episodes of Halo and Peaky Blinders.

The talented main cast includes Ellie James as Nimue, Nathaniel Martello-White as Merlin, Stuart Campbell as Derfel, Daniel Ings as Owain, Valene Kane as Morgan, Jordan Alexandra as Guinevere, and Simon Merrells as Gundleus, with Steven Elder as Bishop Bedwin, Andrew Gower as Sansum, Aneirin Hughes as Gorfydd, Emily John as Ceinwyn, Tatjana Nardone as Ladwyss, Ken Nwosu as Sagramor, and Billy Postlethwaite as Cadwys rounding out the ensemble.
