Officials Report At Least 29 Fatalities In Floods Caused By Monsoon In India
The meteorological department of India predicts an increase in rainfall across extensive areas in the northern part of the country in the days ahead.

Recently, northern India has experienced days of heavy Monsoon rains, resulting in 29 reported deaths and widespread damage to infrastructure. Bridges have been destroyed and roads have become impassable, making many areas inaccessible. Officials are currently dealing with the aftermath of flash floods and landslides caused by torrential rain in Himachal Pradesh, the area most severely affected. The death toll in that region alone has risen to 20. Additional fatalities have been reported in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Kashmir, bringing the total number of deaths to at least 29. The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and assured that the government is fully committed to managing the situation. More rain is expected, and authorities are planning helicopter rescue missions to evacuate around 300 stranded individuals, including tourists, in the Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu regions. The meteorological department has also issued a warning of further rainfall in the coming days across northern India.

In New Delhi, schools were closed due to the heaviest rainfall in a single day during July in the past four decades. The capital city is on high alert as the Yamuna river is close to reaching dangerous levels, leading to flooding of many roads. In Punjab state, streets and neighborhoods are filled with knee-deep rainwater. Data indicates that monsoon rains in the first week of July have already exceeded the normal rainfall by about two percent. The summer monsoon is crucial for South Asia’s annual rainfall, but it also brings devastation through flooding and landslides. Scientists believe that climate change is causing the monsoon to become more intense and unpredictable.
