The Conclusion Demystified: Emma’s Fate in ‘Unicorn: Warriors Eternal’

Genndy Tartakovsky’s epic series Unicorn: Warriors Eternal has completed its first phase in a thrilling season finale titled “End of the Beginning.” Unlike previous awakenings, our group of warriors has yet to succeed in defeating their formidable adversary. In fact, their mission has become even more challenging and powerful with the passing hours. And as if that weren’t enough, they must also face off against dinosaurs, planes, and pyramids. Meanwhile, our fearless leader Emma/Melinda (played by the talented Hazel Doupe) is more determined than ever to guide our heroes into uncharted territory.

This groundbreaking show, which deconstructs the traditional hero’s journey, has taken us on a tumultuous ride from confusion to the brink of saving the world in a finale that may feel rushed but remains utterly compelling. Now, Emma must rally the others and lead them forward.

But let’s not forget about Emma’s journey back to the Cosmic Realm. After the Evil tears Melinda’s soul from her body, Emma mysteriously finds herself back home. Her parents, portrayed by Rosalind Ayres and Ron Bottitta, initially believe she simply needs rest, but they soon discover Emma’s extraordinary abilities as she transforms the bathroom into a canvas of physics equations. Emma, haunted by visions of her and Melinda being torn apart, decides to escape and find her way back to the Cosmic Realm. This desire to return home has been a prevalent theme throughout the season, and now it becomes an urgent necessity. It mirrors the classic hero’s journey, where one must venture back into the unknown instead of settling into a comfortable life. Emma’s bond with Melinda has propelled her towards her destiny.

Thankfully, Emma receives aid from Lao Xi Sheng (played by Alain Uy) and Clarice Ledouyx (played by Grey DeLisle), descendants of former Unicorn members and devoted fans of the Order. Although they lack actual magic, they manage to jog Emma’s memory with the heart of the forest in the Northern Elves’ kingdom. Their support initially has its limitations, but they prove invaluable in Emma’s quest. To secure their assistance, Emma resorts to a bit of blackmail.

In a crucial moment, Emma must make her wish to the heart of the forest, but there’s a catch—it can only grant her wish if it knows she speaks the truth. Otherwise, she will endure immense pain. With great bravery, she utters a simple plea, “Please help me,” seizes the heart, and hurtles back into the cosmic realm.

Upon her return, Emma finds a darker Cosmic Realm awaiting her. She stands before a desolate group, drained of energy and hope, except for Winston, who remains a werewolf. Emma’s presence brings newfound vitality to Unicorn. She proposes a daring plan—to merge all their souls into one, drawing strength from her connection with Melinda. Through their shared growth, their powers have grown stronger. Emma has seen Melinda’s tragic past and now understands why they must fight. This transformation has made her a stronger sorceress and a new person altogether.

But achieving their goal won’t be easy. Copernicus, the skeptical robot, questions whether Emma’s body can handle such an immense power. Emma, however, appeals to his emotions, acknowledging his guidance throughout the ages. Copernicus realizes his purpose is not just to protect, but to fight. With a tear-like gesture, Copernicus releases Melinda’s soul towards Emma, kickstarting the Reawakening. The merging of their souls is interrupted briefly, allowing Melinda and Emma to embrace each other with an unprecedented warmth. Then, Copernicus combines the souls of everyone else, including Merlin and Winston, into Melinda. Together, they form a powerful being that confronts the Evil in its embodiment of a large, enraged face.

But there’s a twist. A voice cries out to Melinda, a voice heard in the pilot episode. This time, Melinda/Emma recognizes that it belongs to her mother, Morgan. Against Edred’s wishes, Melinda/Emma rushes towards her. Younger Merlin emerges from the entity, warning that Morgan cannot possibly be alive. As they approach Morgan, the current-day Merlin appears. It becomes evident that the Evil is not Morgan itself but an entity using her life force to drain her essence. Morgan’s decision to remove Melinda’s powers years ago suddenly makes sense. The entity separated Melinda’s soul from Emma, mirroring Morgan’s previous attempt to protect her child. Unicorn strives to free Morgan, but she insists they kill her to stop the Evil and “end this.” However, Melinda/Emma refuses. Instead, they let go, hurtling out of the Cosmic Realm.

Unicorn emerges physically intact from the Cosmic Realm, but nothing is the same. Seng has returned to his child form, and Winston remains a werewolf. As they contemplate whether it’s all over, Melinda/Emma declares, “No! This is just the beginning.” Their attention is then drawn to a breathtaking sight—a world transformed. Pyramids, castles, volcanoes, skyscrapers, dragons, dinosaurs, and even spaceships shooting lasers greet their eyes. The steampunk 1890s have given way to an entirely new reality, devoid of the Evil or Morgan. Things will never be as they were or as they were meant to be. However, Melinda/Emma remains resolute in her determination to travel through time and save her mother.

“The End of the Beginning” leaves Unicorn: Warriors Eternal on an exhilarating cliffhanger. What happened during the four years spent in the Cosmic Realm? Will Winston remain a werewolf permanently? This finale left us with many unanswered questions that can only be addressed in a second season. Despite its limitations, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal masterfully blends exaggerated humor and captivating drama, complemented by thrilling fight sequences. Genndy Tartakovsky’s visionary storytelling shines through in this vast fantasy world, and the care devoted to Melinda/Emma’s narrative is evident. The pain and sacrifices endured by the chosen one resonate throughout the season, showcasing Edred’s struggles and hardships.

In conclusion, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal has left us hungry for more, promising an exciting continuation of the adventure.
