Funcom made a clever appearance at the Summer Game Fest 2023’s PC Gaming Show, where the eagerly awaited Dune Awakening was showcased with Alpha gameplay footage and an exciting lineup of information on the upcoming survival sandbox MMO. The Creative Director, Joel Bylos, broke down the core elements of the game, which he referred to as the five pillars. These are survival, politics and intrigue, infinite exploration, combined arms, and expression and customization.

Survival in Dune Awakening encompasses all aspects of a traditional survival game, such as water discipline and battling the sandstorms that sweep across Arrakis. Politics and intrigue are an essential part of faction gameplay, and players would have to pick a side while thinking about how they fit in. They may also choose to assassinate members of opposing factions.

Infinite exploration is a significant feature of Dune Awakening that reveals new points of interest when the Coriolis storm sweeps across the terrain, and sand shifts to hide objects, making the game a renewed experience each week. Combined arms combat will involve a blend of vehicle, melee, ranged combat, and abilities that work together to create a seamless sandbox combat adventure. Lastly, expression and customization encompass visual expression and customization through armor sets and clothing as well as a robust character creation. Thus, players can explore the game as a trader, fighter, spy, or any other role they desire.

Bylos also outlined how PvP engagements are fine-tuned within Dune Awakening. He discussed using the Dune lore’s rules of engagement known as Kanly, which allows players to interact in different ways. Dune Awakening players will have varying safe zones where full PvP combat is allowed, giving them the freedom to choose a location depending on their preferred gaming approach.

Players and guilds can compete to gather spice resources on Arrakis and augment character skillsets while taking the risk of becoming addicted. They can use vehicles or Holtzman shields in battles, but it would increase the likelihood of the sandworm showing up and engulfing all and sundry in the area.

Though Funcom did not indicate a release window, they encouraged Dune Awakening enthusiasts to sign up for the beta release. The game would be launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. Share this story on Facebook and Twitter.
