The 53rd annual NAACP Image Awards were unveiled on Saturday night, with returning eight-time winner Anthony Anderson hosting, an A special appearance by Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, accepting the President’s Award as a highlight of the evening.

As People reported, Prince Harry thanked the Black community for “welcoming me so warmly,” and Markle tied their award to ongoing political debates over voting rights legislation.

“It’s inspiring to think about the legacy of the Image Awards, which began shortly after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were passed into law,” she said. “Today, we can continue that legacy by re-establishing federal voting protections in our country and fulfilling the work of civil rights giants, like the late John Lewis.”

The couple also acknowledged the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with Harry saying, “We would like to acknowledge the people of Ukraine, urgently need our continued support as a global community.”

The ceremony also included Tiffany Haddish, Kerry Washington, Issa Rae, Morgan Freeman, LL Cool J, Questlove, Zendaya and more presenting award. Samuel L. Jackson accepted the NAACP Chairman’s Award, while Nikole Hannah-Jones, the Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of The 1619 Project, received the Social Justice Impact Award.
