X-Men Movie Producer Didn’t Know About WandaVision’s Quicksilver

Exclusive: X-Men producer Simon Kinberg didn’t know Evan Peters would be appearing on WandaVision as Quicksilver until his kids told him.

X-Men producer Simon Kinberg was unaware of WandaVision‘s Quicksilver twist before it aired. As the first MCU series to premiere on Disney+, WandaVision caused quite a stir at the beginning of 2021. The nine-episode show quickly became a cultural phenomenon, with viewers tuning in week after week to unravel the mystery of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision’s (Paul Bettany) idyllic, sitcom-inspired lifestyle. WandaVision was a success in more ways than one, garnering an impressive 23 Emmy nominations (which later translated to 3 wins).

WandaVision‘s entire run was one of the buzziest of the year, but the biggest moment had to be episode 5’s Quicksilver reveal. Evan Peters became the first performer from Fox’s X-Men franchise to make the jump to the MCU, though it didn’t quite pan out the way viewers expected. Peters initially played Quicksilver, Wanda’s twin brother, in what looked like an official confirmation of the multiverse and the existence of mutants. However, the WandaVision finale later revealed this Quicksilver was a fake; instead, he was an innocent Westview resident named Ralph Boehner.

Though Kinberg served as a producer on every X-Men movie from X-Men: First Class onward, he was left in the dark about WandaVision‘s Quicksilver appearance. Speaking to Screen Rant while promoting his Apple TV+ series Invasion, Kinberg revealed he didn’t know Peters would be appearing on the show, and that he only learned about it when his kids texted him after the episode. He said:

No, I did not know it was going to happen in advance actually, which was wild. And I did see it in real time. In fact, I didn’t even see it in real time. I was late to it by a day or two, but obviously, I have Twitter and I also have two sons who were hardcore X-Men and Marvel fans, and they saw it and they immediately texted me and they were like, “Dad, did you see?” And I was like, “no, I haven’t seen the ep, thanks for spoiling it.” And then I saw it blowing up Twitter and then I was like, okay, well, immediately, obviously you have to go and watch it.

More than anything, this seems to show just how intense Marvel security is. Though Peters’ casting leaked last year, it wasn’t clear that he would be playing Quicksilver until he turned up on Wanda’s doorstep. It was a massive twist that the WandaVision creative team worked to keep a secret, and those outside of that bubble couldn’t be informed. That included Kinberg, even though he’s worked with Peters’ Quicksilver before. As the producer didn’t have a hand in WandaVision, he wouldn’t have been told ahead of time.

WandaVision‘s eventual Ralph Boehner reveal proved to be quite controversial with fans. Many were displeased that Peters’ role became little more than a joke, while others were simply bummed it wasn’t the long-awaited mutant introduction they had been waiting for. For his part, Peters was amused by the twist, and the WandaVision creatives are sticking by their decision. Whether Peters could ever return to the MCU in the future remains to be seen, but he at least got to surprise everyone – including Kinberg.
