Star Wars: The High Republic is about to reveal one of the fabled Lost Twenty. When George Lucas introduced Count Dooku as a new Sith apprentice in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, he intended the Count of Serenno to be a villain who could match even a Jedi in sheer Force potential. Dooku could do this because he had grown up as a Jedi himself, but had abandoned them. Dooku fell to the dark side, drawing the attention of Darth Sidious – and becoming a pawn for the Sith Lord.
A deleted scene for Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones reveals just how rare it is for a Jedi to leave the Order. This scene shows a conversation between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Archivist Jocasta Nu, in which they discussed why Dooku had decided to quit the Jedi. According to Jocasta Nu, he numbered among the Lost Twenty, the handful of Jedi to become disillusioned with their ways. Now, with Star Wars exploring the High Republic Era – a period of time roughly 200 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace – it looks as though Lucasfilm is about to tell the story behind another of these few as Marvel Comics writer Cavan Scott has revealed the Jedi are about to be betrayed.
Speaking at Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The High Republic panel at ComicCon@Home 2021, Scott said “For Marvel, a Jedi joins the Storm,” when asked to tease an upcoming plot in his comic book run. The villains of the High Republic Era are a group of space pirates called the Nihil, and the “Storms” are high-ranking members of the Nihil who have earned their position by right of conducting numerous atrocities. For a Jedi to join the Storm is, therefore, to betray everything the Order stands for – most definitely meaning they will number among the Lost.
The most likely candidate is Keeve Trennis, the star of Scott’s Star Wars: The High Republic series. Keeve Trennis is the exact opposite of Anakin Skywalker, a young Jedi Knight who is filled with doubt and uncertainty, not least because her former master Sskeer is mysteriously losing access to the Force. Already Keeve Trennis has been exposed to the dark side of the Force, for she and Sskeer bonded with the dark side race known as the Drengir in order to help drive back their invasion of the galaxy. Such an act is sure to have consequences, to leave a taint upon Trennis’ character. And, significantly, a previous audio-book by Cavan Scott – Dooku: Jedi Lost – named “Trennis” among the Lost Twenty. Speaking on Twitter, Scott has previously refused to confirm or deny these are the same people, teasing only that “time will tell.”
The story of Star Wars: The High Republic has just become even more exciting because it really does look as though it will reveal one of the Order’s darkest secrets – the reason an accomplished Jedi like Keeve Trennis would become one of the Lost Twenty. It’s even possible Trennis’ tale will continue in other mediums because as a former Jedi who has been exposed to the dark side she would naturally be of great interest to the Sith. Lucasfilm is working on a Disney+ TV series called Acolyte, set towards the end of the High Republic Era, and there’s been intense speculation the titular character will be tied to the Sith. It’s possible Keeve Trennis will become the dark side Acolyte, sharing Anakin Skywalker’s fate even though she has such a different character. The possibilities for Star Wars are limitless.
