Rick & Morty Channels Hobo With a Shotgun In New Season 5 Promo

A new promo for season 5 of Rick and Morty sees the acclaimed Adult Swim Series channel the cult favorite action thriller Hobo With a Shotgun.

For season 5 of Rick and Morty, a new promo sees the acclaimed Adult Swim series channel the cult favorite action-thriller Hobo With a Shotgun. Directed by Jason Eisener, the Rutger Hauer-starring film first found life as one of the fake trailers included in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse double feature. The story centers on the titular vigilante arriving in the city of Hope Town and electing to exact violent justice on its crooked cops, pedophile Santas, and crime lord ruling over the town.

Spawning from a Back to the Future short parody, creator Justin Roiland partnered with Dan Harmon to develop Rick and Morty for Adult Swim. Centered on mad scientist Rick Sanchez as he returns to his adult daughter’s life and drags his teenage grandson along for dangerous multiverse adventures, the series has been a smash hit for the network. The show has garnered two Primetime Emmy Awards and a sizeable 70-episode renewal order after its first three seasons. After a year of hiatus, season 5 has returned to very positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, and Adult Swim is looking to keep the word rolling on the latest chapter of the series.

Since its return, Adult Swim has delivered several crossover claymation promotions for Rick and Morty, and they’ve been getting increasingly more inventive. Beginning with the likes of Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbor Totoro and Godzilla vs. Kong, the titular multiverse duo have been colliding with mainstream titles. The recent promo crossovers with Hobo and Ari Aster’s Hereditary have proven to be a more intriguing spotlight for the indie film world. While it would have been fun to see some of these crossovers and homages come to life in the series as much as the ads, the videos have nonetheless proven an effective marketing plan for keeping the hype alive for season 5.

Though these may not come to life, Rick and Morty is certainly not slowing down on its homages to fan-favorite films any time soon. With everything from the Training Day/Stand by Me-inspired “Ricklantis Mixup” of season 3 to the forthcoming Hellraiser parody this season, the writers’ room will continue to deliver nods for both theirs and viewers’ most beloved movies. Season 5 of the Emmy-winning series returns on Sunday.
