Power Rangers in Space Villain Astronema Crashes Into the Mighty Morphin World

A classic Power Rangers in Space villain is back, and the cosmic threat has plans for Jason, Zack and Trini, the Omega Rangers.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers #5 by Ryan Parrott, Francesco Mortarino, Simona Di Gianfelice, Raul Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now.

Even though Jason, Zack and Trini were the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the Omega Rangers don’t have many allies left after betraying Zordon and the current Mighty Morphin team. In order to gain some semblance of an upper hand over the impending Empyreal threat, the Omegas kidnapped Lord Drakkon from Zordon’s custody, and they’re new traversing the cosmos in a desperate attempt to save the universe from a grim fate.

While all of Zordon’s allies trying to pen them down, Power Rangers #5 sees the team go to a world of villains to lay low for a bit. Of course, a planet full of monsters is yet another of the last places that the Rangers want to be, and they’ve just stumbled into the grasp of a classic villain, Astronema.

While Xi, Trini, and Drakkon hold down the fort on board the damaged Spectrum II, Jason and Zack are tasked with heading into town and finding the parts needed to repair their ship. The two Rangers are able to pass for weary travelers well enough, but Zack is quickly swindled while gambling for the parts he is looking for. The two Rangers aren’t actually forced to hand over their Morphers for being cheated, but only because they’ve been recognized by none other than Astronema, Princess of Evil.

Astronema is a classic Power Rangers villain, first appearing in 1998’s “From Out of Nowhere,” the two-part premiere of Power Rangers in Space. For most of the series’ run, Astronema was the primary antagonist. The younger sister of Andros, the Red Space Ranger, Karone was captured by the evil Darkonda as a child. She found herself placed under the watchful eye of Dark Specter and Ecliptor, the latter villain becoming a father figure to the young girl and renaming her Astronema. Over time Astronema’s hate for the Rangers would wax and wane periodically, from falling in love with the Silver Ranger to discovering her true origins and being brainwashed once again. Eventually, Astronema would shed her mantle as Princess of Darkness in exchange for that of the Pink Galaxy Ranger, choosing to also go by her birth name from that point on.

Astronema has always been a complex character, and that trend is continuing on in the pages of Boom! Studios Power Rangers. Her hatred for the Rangers leads to their fight spilling out onto the street where the entire group is arrested by the Space Patrol Delta. Even while locked up alongside Zack, Astronema finds the moment to strike with lethal intent, though she is quick to look away when called out on her righteous indignation and how that lines up with her title of Princess of Evil.

Whether or not Astronema follows in the footsteps of her original incarnation is yet to be seen, but there is no doubt that this version of the character will play just as large of a role going forward as the first one did.
