Sony Japan Lives – New Astro Bot Title in Development (Rumor)

The Playstation 5 launched with the exciting title Astro’s Playroom. The title had Nintendo-like quality with great level design and impressive usage of the DualSense controller, staring none other than Astro Bot.

Years later, Astro Bot might be going on another rescue mission after all.

Astro Bot Game in Development

As reported by ComicBook.com, Jeff Grub recently talked about upcoming titles for the PlayStation 5.

According to Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, PlayStation has some “smaller” games lined up to release in the coming months that it hasn’t yet revealed. One of these new titles happens to be the next entry in the Astro Bot series, which would come from developer Team Asobi. Further details on the project weren’t shared by Grubb during the latest edition of Game Mess Mornings, but it was stressed that this Astro Bot title should be released before 2024 ends up coming to a close.

One of these upcoming titles included a new project from Team Asobi. The remains of Studio Japan within PlayStation. But what could this title’s focus be on?

A Bot of Many Styles – Possibilities for Astro Playroom Sequel

When thinking of how Team Asobi mastered the PlayStation 5 and its controller, the ideas are endless. More so considering how this title would be a full-length adventure, not a ‘tech demo’ for the PlayStation 5 DualSense.

One idea I am thinking of is a proper open-world platformer, in the styling of Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie. But similar to how Astro’s Playroom leaned on the PlayStation 5 itself for level locations, why not actual PlayStation franchises? Astro Bot running across a massive Colossi, climbing across a moving train from Uncharted 2, or helping Kat from Gravity Rush save the day would be amazing.

In addition, using elements of those franchises (gravity mechanics, climbing, shooting, platforming, etc), combined with the DualSense implementation? Winning recipe right there.

Does the Bot Put the Visor On? – VR Astro Bot Title Possibility

Astro is no stranger to VR as a platform, starting in an adventure made to sell PS VR1. So his newest outing being a VR platformer to sell the seemingly abandoned PS VR2 would be interesting.

But considering how most PlayStation owners do not even own a unit, it limits the player base of this potential Astro Bot platformer.

If anything, I could see Team Asobi take a page out of Capcom’s playbook. Offer a VR mode or campaign a few months after launch. That’s what they did with the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 4 remake.

Overall Thoughts

As someone who enjoys PlayStation’s more off-kilter and creative outings, I earnestly hope this rumor pans out. I loved Astro’s Playroom. It was one of the first PlayStation 5 games I completed.

But what do you all think? Will Team Asobi continue waving that Studio Japan flag with an Astro sequel? Let us know in the comments below!
