PAX East 2024: GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra Preview

PAX East is back and among the games on the show floor, we sat down and spent time with GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra. A brand new side scrolling beat-em’-up that feels like it is from the early 90s yet has a modern approach.

Out the gate, GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra gives you everything you would expect. There is a bumping soundtrack and an art style I can only describe as authentic. The retro look to GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra tugs on any recollection you might have of the 1980s GI Joe animated series.

GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra plays like any other co-op beat-em’-up from the SNES era. You punch enemies until they blink and fade away off the screen. There are four players to choose from to coincide with the four player co-op. Our demo only gave us access to play as Duke and Scarlet but, the press release promises Roadblock and Snake Eyes as the two additional playable characters.

Each level will take you through a series of short punch and kick waves. Every once in a while a gun will drop which you can pick up. All leading up to the end where you fight a boss. The waves of enemies are insignificant, while the boss battles will take you to more known baddies from the GI Joe universe.

Once you get past the look and feel of the game, the core of the game is rich. Yet at the same time, the more we ask, the more we want to know. Of course, GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra is a four player co-op game. With that said, the team is unable to commit to online co-op. While there is nothing wrong with couch co-op, the team can not confirm Wrath of Cobra will be coming to your living room. Currently, the game is slated for 2024 but, there is no timetable for consoles other than it will not be there at launch.

If you have the nostalgia bug just reading this, GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra will be a fun time on devices like the Steam Deck or Rog Ally. Unfortunately with no commitment to consoles or online co-op, there is still a wait and see element here. GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra will be out later this year on PC. It is published by Freedom Games, and developed by Maple Powered Games. You can Wishlist it on Steam today.
