Sony Pauses PSVR2 Production as Inventory Piles Up

Despite an impressive array of technology behind Sony’s PSVR2, the company has decided to halt Production of the VR device until further notice.

Sony Hits the Brakes on PVSR2 Production

By way of Takashi Mochizuki reporting for Bloomberg, Sony has decided to halt production of PSVR2 units. The reasoning behind the decision is that inventory has been piling up and the company wants to clear them before going back into production.

Launching at a retail price of $549.99 and requiring a PS5 to operate, PSVR2 enthusiasm seems to be waning. Despite some early technical hiccups and launching with AAA-related games such as Horizon Call of Mountain, the lack of additional compelling software hasn’t done enough to move the needle on the VR periphery.

The decision to halt PSVR2 production doesn’t seem to bode well, but it is up to Sony to decide how it wants to save its latest VR product, especially with competition heating up with Meta Quest and its wide array of titles and services.

Looking Beyond the Box

Recently, PlayStation announced that it wants to make the PSVR2 compatible with the PC. This is a smart move as it could invigorate demand for its VR device, despite an already crowded market.

How do you feel about Sony deciding to halt PSVR2 production? Do you think this is a bad sign for the device? How do you feel about bringing the PSVR2 to the PC platform? Sound off in the comment section below.
