Western Digital Unveils PS5 Storage Expansion And Price

Today, Western Digital showed off their new line of storage expansion options. Notably, the new WD_Black SN850 NVMe drive that boasts support for the PlayStation 5. The new PCIe Gen 4 M.2 NVMe SSD will come in three storage options. A 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. Additionally, there is an option for with or without a heatsink.

There is no confirmation if the heatsink version still fits in the PS5. Yet it appears there is room. This very well might be our first look at a compatible PS5 storage expansion solution.

The NVMe PS5 storage expansion slot was recently unveiled as part of the teardown of the PS5 hardware. The video shows that the white covers pop off of the console. Leaving a slot for all four NVMe sizes. The PS5 supports 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 SSD sizes. The WD_Black SN850 will come in 2280.

You can order the WD_Black SN850 here. The 500 GB option is $150, the 1 TB option is $220, and finally the 2 TB is $450. Although, now might be the worst time to invest in storage expansion for the PS5. SSD prices are declining every year and, it seems Western Digital is first out of the gate with PS5 support. However, if you plan on buying every launch game and don’t intend to wait. The 1 TB option is a good fit with the usable 664 GB of storage on the PS5. As expanding on the 664 GB of storage baked into the PS5 will require a storage expansion card.
