In May and June 2018, earthquake monitoring agencies detected a large number of seismic signals that generated a strange earth humming sound. Some of the signals detected in November 2018 lasted for up to 20 minutes.
The signals and earth humming sounds were fascinating to many researchers. A team of scientists conducted a study that strived to explain what happens and it appears that the formation of a new underwater volcano played an important role.
The earthquakes took place around the island of Mayotte, which is located in the Indian Ocean, in one of the Comoros archipelagoes. The study detected over 7,000 tectonic earthquakes. Tectonic earthquakes occur when tectonic plates get stuck while moving alongside each other. The sheer pressure which forces them to move will power the earthquakes. The most intense ones reached a magnitude of 5.9 in May 2018.

The study also identified 407 Very Long Period Signals (or VLPs). The signals are harmonic and low. You can compare the signals to the sounds that a double bass or a big bell makes. They have a significant length of 20-30 minutes, making it possible to detect them from hundreds of miles away.
By making close observations, they traced the earthquakes and signals back to a location 22 miles from the eastern coast of the island. There were no signs of volcanic activity in the area, but magmatic processes seemed to be a likely culprit.
A lowering of the island indicated that the earthquakes were linked to intense activities. With the help of new seismological methods, the Researchers Learned that magma released from a reservoir managed to flow. The flow started the formation of a new underwater volcano in an interesting area. Researchers published the study in a scientific journal.
