id Software’s Controversy With Mick Gordon on the DOOM Eternal’s Soundtrack

DOOM Eternal is one of the most praised first-person shooters, developed by id Software. The game was launched back in 2019, and it was appreciated most for its gameplay and soundtrack composed by Mick Gordon. As things seemed to be good for a while, reports about the authenticity of the soundtrack spoiled the game’s fame. Fans reported that some of Eternal’s soundtrack is almost identical with DOOM 2016’s soundtracks. When contacted by a fan, artists Mick Gordon expressed his disappointment, stating that he’s unhappy with id Software’s decisions. And that’s how the controversy arose.

An Eternal Controversy and the Way id Software Manages to End It

DOOM Eternal’s Executive Producer, Marty Stratton, released an extended statement on Reddit recently. He posted the whole story and detailed how id Software’s Lead Audio Designer Chad Mossholder collaborated with Mick Gordon to produce OST for DOOM Eternal’s Collector’s Edition.

Stratton also explained that a mutual decision was made by Mick and Chad to “combine what each had been working on to come up with a more comprehensive release.” However, last month, Mick stated that he “didn’t mix those and wouldn’t have done such a thing either.” He also expressed his disappointment, telling fans that he is unhappy with id Software for some edits of the soundtracks and that the studio offered Chad co-composer credit.

Excerpt from Stratton’s statement reads: “[…] from our perspective, we didn’t want to be involved in the content of the OST and did absolutely nothing to prevent him from delivering on his commitments within the timeframe he asked for, and we extended multiple times.” As for offering Chad co-composer credit, Stratton explained that it’s a thing they didn’t do, and they will never do. Unfortunately, id Software won’t work with Mick Gordon on the DOOM Eternal DLC they currently have under development.
