Netflix’s Betaal Trailer Promises to be a Scare-Fest

Horror fans out there, this one’s for you. Netflix has been really consistent with pushing out Horror movies and series. I mean, they literally started off the year with Ghost Stories, which, although lost out on the scare factor, did pave the way for more horror content.

This time around, there seems to be some new horrific things just around the corner.

Betaal is Netflix’s new horror series, produced by Red Chillies Entertainment with executive producers Blumhouse Television and SK Global Entertainment.

The trailer has recently dropped and it seems very interesting and creepy.

The story is set in a remote village where civilisation has not reached quite yet. However, things take a dark turn when a two-century-old British Indian Army officer, Betaal, and his battalion of zombie redcoats rise from the dead. And as with zombies, they turn to kill everyone and everything in their path. But, it’s not that easy. Since in comes the CIPD (Counter Insurgency Police Division) to rescue the villagers from the hands of the undead army. Thus, they are forced to become observers to probably the most horrific battle in the history of mankind.

Although the trailer promises of quite the scare fest, I can’t help but pit Betaal against Ghoul, another supernatural Netflix series released in 2018. That one starred Radhika Apte in the lead role and was also, unfortunately, quite a dud.

The trailer also showed some good practical effects along with CGI. The ghosts do seem to be believable and quite scary. There was a part in the trailer where we see a woman in a sari nailed to a slab. It was a fleeting shot but left an impact on me. Hopefully, the whole series will be able to have the same effect.

Thus, Betaal really has some expectations to live up to. Netflix has been coming up with a steady flow of entertaining content for its social-distancing viewers. Although horror content, especially in India, does not have a lot of takers, yet, it’d be nice to have some new flavour for a change, especially when the last few didn’t have that many takers.

Betaal

Betaal is directed and written by Patrick Graham and Nikhil Mahajan. It stars Viineet Kumar, Aahana Kumra, Suchitra Pillai, Jitendra Joshi, Manjiri Pupala and Syna Anand.

This is the first time Red Chillies and Blumhouse will work together. Blumhouse is famous for some of the best horror movies out there like Get Out, The Purge, Ouija, Happy Death Day, The Invisible Man, Sinister and Insidious to name a few.

Betaal will arrive on Netflix on May 24, 2020.
