With the next-gen consoles fast approaching, many gamers have now started to get concerned about the state of Backward Compatibility. We already know the Xbox Series X will support all Xbox One games, with many current-gen games getting free upgrades with Smart Delivery. On the other hand, we don’t know too much about Sony’s plans regarding the same.

Well, according to EA’s recent earnings call, it seems like Sony will also have a similar feature like smart delivery.

“Note that this year, the phasing includes the effect of revenue recognition from the games we are launching for the current generation of consoles that can also be upgraded free for the next generation,” said Blake Jorgensen Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer at EA.

This doesn’t exactly come as a surprise considering just how much backward compatibility has been in the conversation regarding next-gen consoles. Microsoft has pushed smart delivery as one of its defining features on the Xbox Series X. Sony also suggested in their PS5 deep dive video that their console will support and play older PS4 games at boosted frequencies, thereby providing potentially higher framerates or higher resolution.
