In a blog post, EA confirmed that the next entry in the Battlefield franchise will be arriving sometime in 2021. This is the first time the FPS series will be seeing a 3 year gap, hopefully for the better.

“The team at DICE is working on the standalone Battlefield V update releasing this summer, and continuing their work on delivering Community Games,” EA said in a statement. “While the studio’s vision for Star Wars Battlefront 2 is now complete with this week’s The Battle on Scarif Update, the servers, in-game challenges, recurring events and game support will continue as the game lives on with players and the community.”

The statement closes confirming that we’ll be getting our hands on a new Battlefield game next year: “Longer term, the studio is focused on the future of Battlefield that we’ll be bringing to players in 2021.”

EA hasn’t shared any concrete details about the new entry, but it did tease that the title will be “targeting new innovation that will be enabled by next-gen platforms.” The game will quite possibly be a cross-gen title, like Ubisoft’s new Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Personally, along with majority of people, I hope for the new entry to be set in Modern era like Battlefield 3 and 4. We’ve had enough dose of World Wars and 98k carbines. Most BF fans have been asking for a modern shooter since DICE went historical with Battlefield 1. There’s a reason BF4 still manages to pull in thousands of players 7 years after release.

Check out World War 3 on Steam to put a lid onto that modern shooter craving in the meantime.

The next Battlefield might launch on Steam, as several other Origin-only titles are already set to be hit the store soon, along with their $5 subscription service. Last year’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was the first EA title to launch on Steam since 2011.
