MediaTek confirms the first 5G SoC mass production to start in Q1, 2020

After the release of its new gaming chipsets Helio G90 and Helio G90T, MediaTek’s second-quarter earnings report was also released. MediaTek’s 12, 2019 revenue stands at NT$61.57 billion, up 16.8% from the previous month, and 1.8% year-on-year growth with a net profit of NT$6.5 billion.

At the earnings conference, CEO Cai Lixing revealed that the 5G chipset based on the 7nm process will deliver samples to customers in the third quarter, whereas, Mass Production will start in the first quarter of next year. At the same time, more 5G SoC products will be launched in 2020, and the second 5G SoC will be available in the first half of next year.

To recall, MediaTek had announced its first 5G chipset in May this year tentatively named as MediaTek 5G. The company has already revealed most of its specifications. As per the specifications provided by the company, The MediaTek 5G chipset employs the latest ARM Cortex-A77 primary CPU cores paired with new Mali-G77 GPU. It has an integrated Helio M70 5G modem, which is capable of providing up to 4.7 Gbps download speeds and 2.5 Gbps upload speeds.

Moreover, the chipset supports up to 80MP camera with 4K video encode/decode at 60fps. The camera specs are really impressive and we would be seeing some really sharp cameras on upcoming smartphones. The company further claims an advanced AI processing units (APU) to be integrated for the enhanced Artificial Intelligence capabilities.
