Ask the Telecom Pro – December 2019

Q: What is a DAS network?

A: A Distributed Antenna System (DAS) is a Network of interconnected transmitters and receivers in a defined geographic area (indoors or outdoors) that is used to extend a cellular network signal. DAS is common in high-rise buildings, structurally dense buildings, and other areas that have poor or limited cellular coverage.

As 5G and other advanced mobile technologies grow in popularity, DAS is likely to become a key element of your organization’s network design strategy. AOTMP® University’s Network Design Core Activity is designed to help you future-proof your strategy with tips, best practices, and real-world examples.

Q: My organization is tax exempt. Does this mean that I do not have to pay federal universal service fees?

A: Exemption status does not typically extend to surcharges and fees assessed by Telecom carriers. Review service guides to learn more about taxes, surcharges, and fees assessed by your carriers for your services and to understand which charges are eligible for tax exemption. It is also advisable to consult with your tax department to determine the scope of tax exemption status for your organization.

If you want to be sure about your universal service fee status, a third-party expert can offer tremendous insight your internal teams lack. Our Invoices and Telecom Expense Management 101 Course, for example, teaches you everything you need to know about telecom taxes, surcharges, and fees.
