How to Fix Battery Health Capacity Dropped on iPhone

Does the full capacity of your iPhone battery seem to drop much faster?

You may have been expecting to get a 100% Battery status when charging your battery to full capacity. But since your battery degrades over time, you will gradually notice that this will drop, too. Depending on the usage, you may experience this issue sooner than others.

But what if you are experiencing this issue much sooner on your new iPhone?

We will answer that question in our article today. Along with the possible fixes, we will discuss what might have caused this issue to happen on your iPhone. Hopefully, before the end, you will learn how to fix the Battery Health capacity dropped on your iPhone.

1. Avoid the Heat.

Sometimes, you may be leaving your iPhone in a hot environment. Heat can lead to corrosion that shortens your battery life. Although this is not a direct ‘fix’ to this issue, it can help prevent your battery health from drastically reducing further.

A few points here: do not leave your iPhone inside your car that is parked in broad daylight. Also, do not put it near a device or equipment that generates heat or in direct sunlight.

In all such cases where you leave your iPhone in a hot environment, it can cause the device to heat up and be prone to battery damage.

2. Quit Unused Apps.

When you have a lot of apps launched and running in the background, your iPhone may not be able to run them optimally. This can happen, especially when you reach the maximum capacity of your device resources.

If that happens, you need to force quit the unused applications that are running in the background of your iPhone.

Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Go ahead and display your most recent app on your iPhone.
    • For iPhone X or later versions, swipe up from the bottom of the screen until you get to the middle.
    • For iPhone 8 or earlier versions, double-click on the Home button.
  2. Then, swipe right or left to navigate on the apps that are currently launched.

  1. Finally, swipe up on the application preview to close it.

This is also true for unused network services. If you are not using your Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Cellular Data, then make sure to turn it off. This has been a handy tip for us, especially when we urgently needed our devices to stay alive whilst we couldn’t locate a power outlet to charge it.

You can easily enable or disable these on the Control Center of your iPhone by tapping on the corresponding icon.

3. Powercycle the Device.

If your iPhone has been running for a long time without shutdown, then there is a chance that the battery status is not updating correctly. This is because your device may be overloaded with background tasks and does not have any space for new ones. 

To fix this, you will need to offload your device by restarting it. 

To do so, open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap on General, and then select the Shut Down option. Now drag the Slide to Power Off button to the right to complete the process. This will shut down your iPhone.

Give it 2-3 minutes before you turn the device back by pressing on the Power button. However, if your iPhone is frozen and you cannot do this, you must force restart your iPhone instead. 

4. Enable Optimised Battery Charging.

If you have iOS 13 or later, there is an iOS feature called Optimized Battery Charging, which reduces the wear on your battery. The feature works, as explained by Apple, by delaying charging when it’s past the 80% mark to improve the battery lifespan.

To enable it, just go to the iPhone Settings, then tap on Battery, and then Battery Health option. Toggle the Optimized Battery Charging button to enable the feature.

5. Reset to Factory Defaults.

It is also possible that your iPhone is giving you an inaccurate status of your battery health. This can happen for a wide variety of reasons, but most commonly, it’s down to a bug with the iOS itself or that there may be an undetected setting that is causing this. 

To fix this issue, you need to reset your iPhone to default factory state.

Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Go ahead and make sure to back up the data on your iPhone.
  2. Then, tap on your iPhone Settings and then the General option.
  3. Next, tap on the Reset option and then the Erase All Content and Settings option.

  1. Finally, provide the passcode if applicable to complete the process.

Now that you have wiped your iPhone, try to set it up as new. When setting up the iPhone, stick to only setting the essential features on your iPhone and check the battery status on it. From there, you can one-by-one install the apps you’ve had previously and customize your setting preferences to test if any such change affects the battery health reading.

6. Check Battery Status.

If you’ve done all of the above and you still find that the battery health capacity is incorrectly showing, it’s time we shift our focus to battery health itself as it could mean that there is a problem with the battery in your iPhone. 

Now, if you don’t already know how to check the battery health on your iPhone, you can do so by going into your Settings app, tapping the Battery option, and then selecting Battery Health.

You will be able to see the maximum capacity of your battery relative to when it was new. 

The standard rule of thumb to follow here is if your Maximum Capacity is still above 80% while it is under warranty, then wait on it to decrease below that percentage. Apple will not replace your battery if it’s not under 80% of the maximum capacity. 

7. Ask Help from Apple Support.

Once you’ve identified that your battery health’s ‘Maximum Capacity’ is below 80% (Method 6), you can visit your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have your iPhone’s battery inspected and replaced. 

We also like to suggest that you visit Apple even if the ‘Maximum Capacity’ is not below 80%, but you still experience issues such as the battery health capacity rapidly dropped on your iPhone or it is abruptly shutting down.

It’s likely that Apple will inspect your device and have it fixed/replaced, which can come at a cost, so please make sure to check your available warranty options and Apple Care+ coverage of your iPhone before heading there. If you’re under AppleCare+ or if you’ve just bought the device within the last 14 days, then Apple should be able to replace the battery at no cost.
