How to Fix Apple Watch Exercise Ring Is Not Working: 8 Ways

1. Edit Your Health Profile.

First and foremost, you will want to make sure that the information (in the form of variables) that you feed to the exercise ring feature is correctly defined according to your own health profile. These variables will help the application understand you through your data. These variables consist such as your age, gender, height, weight, activities, and more, all of which play a big part in determining the accuracy of the Apple Watch exercise ring calculation.

To manage your health profile and determine if everything is correct, here’s how you can do it according to Apple Support:

  1. Go ahead and open the Watch app on your iPhone, which is paired to your Apple Watch.
  2. Then, tap the My Watch option and then tap the Health option.
  3. Now, tap on your Health Profile and then tap on Edit.

  1. Finally, provide all the correct information about yourself and tap Done to save it.

Now that your health profile has the correct data, it should be able to calculate your activities accurately according to the information that is given.  With this, you should be able to complete your exercise ring according to the activity profile. Test it and let us know below on whether this method works for you.

2. Check Physical State.

There is a possibility that you currently do not comply with the physical setup that the Apple Watch requires you to do. For instance, wearing your Apple Watch incorrectly or having wet forearms can interfere with the watch’s built-in sensors to precisely record your workouts.

Here’s a checklist on what to consider:

  • Wear the Apple Watch on the top of your wrist with a snug fit.
  • Make sure that your arm is clean and dry when you wear it.
  • Before doing any exercise, tighten your Apple Watch so it can accurately measure your heart rate.
  • When doing exercise, swing your arms naturally, especially when doing walks or runs.
  • After the exercise, loosen the Apple Watch to a snug fit.

By making sure that you follow the above best practices before your workout, it will allow your Apple Watch sensor to record your activity and credit it to your exercise ring.

3. Check the Settings.

Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Go ahead and make sure that your Apple Watch Series 1 or earlier and iPhone is paired via Bluetooth. For Series 2 or later versions, you only need your Apple Watch.
  2. Then, if applicable, make sure that you connect the devices that need internet access to a stable source via Wi-Fi or cellular data.
  3. Next, on your iPhone, go to the Settings, then tap on Privacy and then select the Location Services option and ensure that it is enabled.

  1. On the Location Services section, tap on System Services and then toggle the Motion Calibration & Distance option to enable it.

  1. Next, jump back onto the Home Screen of your iPhone and launch the Watch application.
  2. Then, tap on My Watch option, then tap on Privacy and toggle the Heart Rate option to enable it.
  3. Go back to My Watch section, then tap on Passcode, and toggle the Wrist Detection option to enable it.

  1. Finally, go back to My Watch section, then tap on Workout, and make sure Power Saving mode is disabled. If enabled, toggle the button to turn it off.

Additionally, if you are going for a run, check out on how to set up your Workout app for running on your iPhone. You may need to change the settings of your workout according to your profile as well.

4. Select the Proper Workout Types.

One of the other user suggested tips was that you might not have chosen the proper workout settings on your Workout app in Apple Watch.

Each of the workout types can be adjusted according to your profile. To fix it, make sure that you learn about the workout types and adjust them according to your capabilities. For instance, do not provide values that seem beyond your current physical limitations and instead be reasonable with it.

Here’s the list of workout types supported by the Workout app on your Apple Watch:

  • Walking
  • Running
  • Cycling
  • Elliptical
  • Rower
  • Stair Stepper
  • High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
  • Hiking
  • Yoga
  • Swimming
  • Wheelchair
  • Other

Take note that if your activity is not on the list, then make sure to define it correctly using the Other workout type. With this, you should be able to teach your Apple Watch to understand how you exercise and, in turn, provide more correct results for the exercise ring.

5. Calibrate Apple Watch Accuracy.

You might have transferred to a new location or perhaps not have worked out for a very long time. Just like any instrument, you can calibrate your Apple Watch that will allow you to get it back on track and begin recording the correct data.

Here’s how you calibrate your Apple Watch:

  1. Go ahead and open the Watch application on your iPhone.
  2. Then, tap on the Privacy option.
  3. Now tap on the Reset Fitness Calibration Data option with the orange text color.

  1. After that, force restart both your iPhone and your Apple Watch.
  2. Next, wear your Apple Watch and go to an open outdoor area with good GPS reception.
  3. If you are using Apple Watch Series 1 or earlier, you need to enable the GPS on your iPhone and hold it or wear it with a wrist or arm-band. For later versions, just wear your Apple Watch.
  4. Then, open the Workout app and tap Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run.
  5. Finally, walk or run on your normal pace for 10 to 20 minutes.

The more often you use the app, the more precise it gets with the way it captures your pace and recording the effectiveness of the activity. By doing the process above, you were able to calibrate your Apple Watch to record your pace, which will be gradually increased in accuracy over time with the frequency of your usage.

6. Update to the Latest watchOS Version.

Perhaps on the more common suspects in causing this kind of issue with the exercise ring feature on your Apple Watch is the watchOS version itself.  It’s important to understand that the older the watchOS version is, the more likely it contains bugs or glitches that may incur the device’s performance. So it’s always a good idea to make sure that your Apple Watch’s operating system (watchOS) is kept updated with the latest patches that address such kind of issues. Do take note that before you go through with the updates on your Apple Watch that you also make sure your iPhone has the latest version of iOS installed too.

Here’s how you can check for the latest watchOS updates on your Apple Watch:

  1. Go ahead and connect the Apple Watch to its charger and make sure it is at least 50 percent charged.
  2. Next, plug-in your iPhone into power and connect it to your Wi-Fi.
  3. Make sure to hold your iPhone next to your Apple Watch, so that they’re in pairing range.
  4. Now on your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and tap the My Watch tab.

  1. Next, tap on the General option and then tap Software Update.
  2. Finally, tap the Download option and provide the passcode if applicable.

After having updated your Apple Watch to the latest version, you should be able to reuse your Apple Watch and find that it records your activity accurately in your exercise ring. If not, you will need to re-calibrate it again. Refer to Method 5 (above) for the calibration process.

7. Reset Apple Watch and Pair Again.

If none of the above solutions work to fix the issue, then this method can be your last resort. By resetting your Apple Watch and pairing it again with your iPhone, it can help rebuild the connection profile between your iPhone and Apple Watch, which may have got corrupted. This can happen if a particular watchOS update or the device experienced some abnormal crashes or shutdowns. Rebuilding the connection profile will also restore your Apple Watch to how you first got it, with its default values. After that, it should get the updated settings from your iPhone.

Note

Take note that resetting your Apple Watch will erase all of the data and apps stored on the device. To back up your Apple Watch, you will need to make a backup of your connected iPhone using iCloud or Finder/iTunes. Alternatively, your iPhone will also automatically create a backup of your Apple Watch the moment you unpair it from your iPhone. Once after you complete the reset of your Apple Watch, you then have the option to choose and restore from the backup during the pairing process.

Once you’ve made the backup, here’s how you can go about the reset process:

  2. Next, hold your iPhone over the animation on your Apple Watch and wait for the message that the watch is paired. If you can’t use the camera, tap the Pair Apple Watch Manually, and follow the instructions.

  4. Finally, complete the paring process by tapping the Digital Crown.

Test your newly reset Apple Watch to see if the actions above have managed to fix the issue. You should be able to record your activities accurately from now on as well as have the exercise ring working. Additionally, you may also try to calibrate it again using Method 5 (above).

8. Contact Apple Support.

If you are still having issues, you need to let an Apple-certified technician check your Apple Watch. It might be possible that you have a defective sensor or hardware that is causing this issue. You can also have them verify that the system configuration on your Apple Watch and iPhone are all correct. Their services are available at your nearest Apple Store.
