How To Put iPhone X In Recovery Mode

Sometimes the only solution to get your iPhone X back into the working state is by placing it in the recovery mode.

Now you may be wondering, what kind of situations would be needed to put your iPhone into recovery mode?

Some of the scenarios in which you will have to put your iPhone X into recovery mode are as follows:

  1. The Apple logo is displayed on the screen for a very long time with no progress bar.
  2. The iTunes logo with a USB cable is displayed on the screen.
  3. If iTunes doesn’t recognize your iPhone when connected via a USB cable.
  4. You are locked out of your iPhone X because of several attempts of entering the wrong passcode.

Now before you proceed you will need to know a few important things:

  • When trying to restore your iPhone X, all the data on the iPhone X will be lost if you were to put it into recovery mode. In such a case, it is recommended that before letting your iPhone X be put into recovery mode, that you make a backup of all your data. Apple has written a great guide on how to backup your iPhone which you may wish to follow.
  • It is also good if you first try to update the software of your iPhone X when in recovery mode instead of restoring because the update will not delete the data.

So without any further ado, let’s jump right in and show you how you can put your iPhone X in recovery mode.

How To Put iPhone X In Recovery Mode: 5 Steps

Step 1: Connect to iTunes.

Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your Mac or PC.

  • If you’re using a Mac, you can download iTunes from here.
  • If you’re using a Windows PC, you can download iTunes from here.

Now once you’ve made sure to install the latest version of iTunes, now connect your iPhone X to your Mac or PC using your iPhone’s charging USB cable and launch your newly installed iTunes.

Step 2: Force Restart your iPhone X.

After you have launched iTunes on your PC. Force restart your iPhone X. The steps you need to follow to force restart your iPhone X are:

  1. Quick-press the Volume Up button.
  2. Quick-press the Volume Down button.
  3. Now press and hold the Side button (the Power button) until your iPhone’s screen turns black. You should the following screen (shown below) on your iPhone. If it doesn’t repeat the steps again by pressing the buttons (make sure it is a quick press!) then try again.

iTunes will notify you when your iPhone X goes into the recovery mode.

Step 3: Update or Restore your iPhone X.

Once your iPhone X is in Recovery Mode, a dialogue box will appear on your iTunes screen asking you if you want to Update or Restore your iPhone X.

Try to first Update your iPhone X because that will not delete the data from your device and will download the latest version of iOS onto your iPhone.

You can also choose the Restore option for your iPhone X but restoring will most certainly erase off all the data on your iPhone X and download the latest software resulting in setting up your iPhone X as a completely new device.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3.

Allow the update to complete its installation. In case the download takes longer than 30 minutes (this may vary based on your internet speeds) or your iPhone X exits the recovery mode then make sure to let the download finish and repeat Step 3 above again.

This is because entering the recovery mode may cause some hiccups along the way. Although this is a rare case if it happens then you have an option to fall back on if the download takes too long.

5. Time to Setup Your iPhone X!

After the download is completed, follow the instructions on the iTunes screen to set up your iPhone X.

Your device will automatically reboot and exit the Recovery Mode after completion of update or restore.

Changed your mind on Recovery Mode?

If you wish to exit the Recovery Mode, then it is possible only if it is prior to the completion of update/restore. You can do that easily by following the two simple steps below:

1. Firstly, disconnect your iPhone X by safely unplugging the charging USB cable from the PC.

2. Next, press the Power button on the side (it’s also called the Side button) and allow your iPhone X to restart.

One thing you should know is, if you exit the recovery mode before the update/restore is complete then, the state of your iPhone X will remain exactly the same as it was before entering the Recovery Mode.
