How to Change to Dark Theme on Visual Studio

Having a dark theme on an IDE like Visual Studio can at times be comforting to for the eyes, especially if you’ve been working on it for long hours.

Although, the steps on how to enable dark mode on Visual Studio remains complicated because it is hidden somewhere in the multitude of tabs that Visual Studio has.

In this guide, I will show you step-by-step on how you access the Visual Studio light/dark theme setting and then proceeding to enable dark mode on your interface.

How to Change to Dark Theme on Visual Studio: 3 Steps

  1. Go ahead open up your Visual Studio and then from the top-menu go to Tools and then from the dropdown list click on Options.

  1. Next, in the new Options window that opens, make sure under the Environment left sidebar settings to select the General tab.

  1. Now you will find that under Visual Experience, the Color theme dropdown box can be changed from the default Light to Dark.

Lastly, hit OK to apply the changes and you’re done!

Sometimes it may take a while for the theme changes to come into effects, in which case a restart of the IDE will do the trick.

If you ever wish to change the theme back to Light or you wish to try the Blue, Blue (Extra Contrast) themes then simply follow the steps above to access the Color theme setting again in your Visual Studio.
