How to Fix iPad Double Spacing in Facebook Posts

Trying to comment on a Facebook post but as you type you get 2 spaces between words?

You’re not alone.

Mysteriously, this issue as reported by users only happens on Facebook, especially in posts. The issue also only persists on iPads (although some iPhone users have also reported the same issue with us).

So whether you’re using the web version of Facebook or the Facebook app, the following methods below help you guide around a few workarounds and probable solutions that may help.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to Fix iPad double spacing in FaceBook posts.

Let’s dive right in.

iPad Double Spacing in FaceBook Posts: 7 Ways

Apologies as some screenshots below are taken on an iPhone and not on an iPad.
The steps are the same.

1. Clearing Safari’s Cookies.

One of the first things you may try is to clear your iPad’s search browser cookies — Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox (if you’re using FB via browser)

To clear your cookies and history on Safari:

  1. Jump into your Settings app and then tap on Safari.

  1. Next, scroll down and tap on Clear History and Website Data. This option will clear all of your search history, cookies as well as any data stored from your browsing. This will not remove or get rid of your autofill information — such as your saved passwords, usernames.

Done.

To clear your cookies and history on Google Chrome:

  1. Go ahead open up the Chrome app on your iPad and at the bottom right-hand side tap on More (the three-dot button).
  2. Then tap Settings.
  3. Next, tap on Privacy Clear Browsing Data.
  4. Next, check the Cookies, Site Data and uncheck any other selected items. Done? Great. Tap on Clear Browsing Data and then hit Clear Browsing Data once again.
  5. Lastly, hit Done and you’re done!

To clear your cookies and history on Firefox:

  1. First and foremost, tap on the menu button (it’s the one with three lines) at the bottom right-hand side of your iPad’s screen.
  2. Next, tap Settings from the menu.
  3. Now in the Settings menu, under the Privacy section, tap on Data Management.
  4. Lastly, simply tap the switch next to the types of information you want to remove and then hit the Clear Private Data button.

Voila! Once you’ve cleared the cookies, try hopping onto Facebook and typing once again into a comment or a post to test if the above steps managed to fix the issue or not.

2. Request Desktop Site.

One workaround that may work to this issue is to request the desktop version of Facebook using your Safari or Google Chrome.

Here’s how you request for the desktop site in Safari:

  1. Jump into the Safari app and then to the left of the address bar, do you see Aa icon? Tap it and you will see from the dropdown box the option to Request Desktop Site.

If you’re on iOS 12 or prior iPadOS versions, long press and hold down on the Refresh icon (right-hand side of the address bar) and you will see the option to Request Desktop Site will pop up.

If you’re using Google Chrome on your iOS device, then here’s how you request for the desktop site:

  1. Go ahead open up the Chrome browser on your iPad and then visit Facebook.
  2. Next, tap on the three-dot menu icon located at the top-right hand side corner of your iPad’s screen.
  3. From the drop-down menu, tap on the Request Desktop Site.

Done. Try it and see if you’re able to type and post onto Facebook using the desktop version of the site.

3. Disabling Autocorrect and Other Settings.

As mentioned, this is a Facebook problem and not a bug with your iPad.

Although one handy solution that was suggested by a few users over at Apple Support Communities was to turn off

All four Auto-Correction, Auto-Capitalisation, Enable Key Flicks and Enable Dictation Settings and then proceed to test out Facebook to see if it resolves the problem.

If you’re interested to test this out, here’s how you do it:

  1. Jump into the Settings app and then tap General.
  2. Next, tap on Keyboard.  Over here temporarily toggle off the following settings: Auto-Correction, Auto-Capitalisation, Enable Key Flicks (may or may not be there) and Enable Dictation.

The reasoning why disabling all four settings (primarily Auto Capitalization) may work is because these are settings that influence how you type and post content onto Facebook. Hence turning these off may provide a clean slate where no keyboard settings are in place that might cause the bug in the first place.

Again you may try it and see if it works. If it doesn’t work, you can always enable these four settings back by following the same steps above.

4. Try Using a Keyboard Cover Instead of the iOS Keyboard.

If all this while you’ve been trying your iPad’s touchscreen keyboard instead of a type-cover then try getting hold of a type cover and then test typing with it to see if the double-spacing bug persists.

Alternatively, if you were using a type-cover all this to type, try taking it out and then using your iPad’s touchscreen keyboard. It may be a little uncomfortable but it’s to diagnose whether the double spacing is a source of either typing surfaces.

5. Update Your iPad (If You Have Not)

Been putting off an iOS update lately?

Well, why not try to download the iOS update for your iPad and see if the latest update addresses a fix for the bug.

To update your iPad, here are the steps:

  1. Open the Settings app and then tap General.
  2. Next, tap on Software Update.
  3. If any iOS/iPadOS updates are pending, proceed to Download and Install them.
  4. Lastly, when prompted, you will need to enter your iPhone’s passcode. If you don’t know your passcode, learn what to do.

6. Use Facebook App Instead of Facebook Browser.

The obvious workaround to this bug would be to just keep using the Facebook app rather than relying on your browser to access Facebook. The browser mode on iPad that is used on all conventional HTML browsers Safari, Firefox, Chrome, etc. is the source of the bug as Facebook’s code is incorrectly interpreting when an input such as when you type and enter spaces into posts on Facebook on the iPad.

So try migrating to using the Facebook app (it may suck) rather than the browser version since at this point usability is what matters most.

7. Try Changing the Language on Facebook.

Another solution that was suggested by users in the Apple Support Communities forums was to simply change the language set in your Facebook account web page.

The username was in English (US) language and he/she switched to the English (UK) language and noticed the fix was instant.

Whether or not this solution works could be because there may be some form of language caching which gets reset when you set a new language.

To change your language on Facebook on your iPad, here are the steps:

  1. Jump into the Facebook app and then tap on the three-line icon (bottom-right hand corner). This will bring up the dropdown menu for your settings.

  1. Scroll down this dropdown box and under the section Help & Settings, tap on Language.
The new version of the Facebook app’s language setting.
  1. Now simply choose another language like English (UK) if you’re on English (US) or vice versa.

Note

The newer versions of Facebook for iOS will require that you set the language in your iPad’s settings. You can learn more about here from Facebook themselves (since they change the structure of their app’s settings quite so often).

Again give this suggestion a go, and you have the option to change it back if it still doesn’t work by following the steps above.

8. Installing the Gboard Keyboard and Using It.

Lastly, a suggestion from one of our readers was to jump onto using Gboard Keyboard and then trying to use it instead of the usual keyboard when posting onto Facebook in the web browser on the iPad.

Here’s how you can install Gboard keyboard onto your Apple iPad:

  1. Grab your iPad and then head over to this App Store link to install the Gboard app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gboard-search.-gifs.-emojis/id1091700242?ls%3D1%2526mt%3D8

  1. Next, open up your Settings app and then tap on General.
  2. Then, tap on Keyboard.
  3. Now, tap on Keyboards.
  4. Over here, simply tap on the Add New Keyboard option then from the list look for the Gboard keyboard and select it.
  5. Lastly, tap on the Edit button (top right-hand corner) and touch and hold on the Reorder button to drag the Gboard keyboard to the top of your keyboards list. Then tap Done.

You may try once again to use the Gboard keyboard as your main keyboard when trying to type on Facebook. If you wish to revert to the Apple keyboard then you may follow the above steps and remove the Gboard from your iPad.

The suggestions above can be considered a workaround to the issue whilst we wait for Facebook to fix this issue officially. One thing is for certain is that this is not an Apple issue and is completely on Facebook to resolve it. Which means it’s pretty pointless if you were to plan to visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider to help you out since the issue does not persist over other apps other than just Facebook.

That’s pretty much it.

Feel free to go through the many tips and advice from the many helpful comments posted by others who had the same issue below. 🙂
