Catching Zzzzzz’s with the Sleep Time App

Tags: sleep

I’m a girl who loves to Sleep. I love a good power nap. I’m happier when I get enough sleep, everyone around me is happier when I get enough sleep. I like to get up early (because it just feels more efficient, right?) and at the end of the day there’s still so much to do, read, enjoy that sometimes it’s hard to shut it down in time for my early wake-up call (like when you need to write a post about your favorite alarm app…). So if you can pair all of this with some data about my sleep, claim that it will wake me up with timing that is just right, and roll it into an alarm app, I’m sold. Meet the Sleep Time app.

The Sleep Time App is pretty simple – it works with the accelerometer on your phone to track your sleep cycles (awake, light sleep, deep sleep). You set it as you go to bed, give it the latest time you’d like to wake up (ex: 6am) and set it on your mattress. From your movement through the night, it tracks your sleep pattern and then your alarm goes off when you hit a light sleep cycle any time within 30 minutes of your wake-up time. So if I’m coming out of a deep sleep and into a light sleep around 5:42, my alarm will go off. The idea is that you’ll awake less groggy when you’re in a light sleep cycle than if I had gone back into deep sleep and my alarm went off right at 6am on the dot (since that was an arbitrary time I chose).

Do I think it works? I’m not sure. I’ve been using it for a couple months and I don’t actually know if I feel any different when I wake up. However, I’m a total geek for tracking any of this data (pedometer on my phone, I can even take my heart rate on my Galaxy S5) – do I really need any of this stuff? Probably not but it makes me happy so here I am.

In the morning, you can look at a graph of your last night’s sleep with a nice graph and it calculates how “efficient” your night of sleep was. It will also compile some stats for you over time like when you usually go to bed or wake up.

Also, as a morning person, I don’t mind the days it wakes me up a little early – in fact I like the extra time in the morning. It’s probably not for everyone, but I’d recommend a try.

The Sleep Time app is available for Android and iPhone. Download it, try it out in place of your regular alarm, and let us know what you think!
