Augmenting My Versace!

Earlier this week, Disruptive Tech Asean one of the publications owned by company AOPG, interviewed a CEO of a new Fashion start-up called "BlinQ". One of their unique propositions is an AR front end app that allows you to "try on" luxury brand dresses by augmenting the dresses to a photo of yourself. Using AI, the app will work out your dress size and scale the clothes you try to fit you.

Welcome to the future of fashion? Well yes and no. At the current time the power of our edge devices is possibly the limiting factor in how powerful the AI we use on our phones can be. The BlinQ app which it should be said is only a beta preview of what is to come, is fun for sure, but has some way to go before you really feel like you are seeing exactly what you would look like in the actual dress. But that is where we are heading.

My own view is this, the only limit for AR is our own imaginations and time. If we wait long enough AR will catch up with whatever we can imagine. Let's keep with the idea of fashion. Many people quite rightly say that AR can never replace the total fashion shopping, after all decisions made about clothes are about how we "feel" in them, the texture even the Smell can make a difference as to whether we want an item enough to purchase it.

That’s where time and imagination will kick in. Today most of the AR we see is focused on one of our senses – site. But AR does not need to be limited to that, there is no reason why touch and smell cannot also be augmented, it will just take time for the technology to catch up.

However, the day when the augmented fashion store allows us to feel, see, smell and even hear the items we try on will come. It's not a question of if, only a question of when. It may be years, decades or longer before we see AR complement all of our senses, but the first steps are being taken now.

Companies like BlinQ are more than a gimmick looking for an angle, they are the start of a revolution in how fashion will be consumed and how new companies that embrace the technology will change the landscape of the fashion industry
