San Diego Padres Puts Nelson Cruz in Charge, After What It Seemed to be One Tough Decision

On Tuesday, the San Diego Padres made several roster adjustments, one of which was the decision to designate Nelson Cruz for assignment. So Padres has put right-handed starting pitcher Michael Wacha on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder irritation designation (retroactive to Sunday), and they have optioned right-handed pitcher Domingo Tapia to Triple-A El Paso.

Nelson Cruz, who has been selected to the All-Star game seven times and is now playing in his 19th season in the major leagues, is currently at bat.245 while playing in 49 games, with five home runs and 23 RBIs. What does the future have in store for San Diego Padres right now?

The decision to put forward Cruz as a designated hitter was a really “tough one,” according to Padres manager Bob Melvin, who told reporters that the choice was taken with adaptability in sight.

Wacha is now 8-2 with a 2.84 earned run average in 15 starts for the season, which is his debut in San Diego. He was sidelined for one start due to a shoulder issue earlier this month. Melvin expressed optimism that Wacha will be well enough to play again following the All-Star break.

“He’s a big impact in the clubhouse. Across the board, throughout the league, the respect that he brings, playing against him from afar, it’s fantastic. He comes as advertised — leadership, all of the above,” Melvin said, according to MLB.com.

What are your initial reactions and opinions regarding the San Diego Padres’ decision to put Nelson Cruz in charge? What are your predictions about what will happen next?

In a series of simultaneous movements, left-handed pitcher Jose Castillo, right-handed pitcher Matt Waldron, and infielder Matthew Batten were all recalled from El Paso.

During the offseason, Cruz, who is currently 43 years old, inked a deal with the Padres that is just for one year. In his whole career, he has hit 464 home runs.
