An international test for standardized English Language for non-native language speakers of English. It was jointly managed or carried out by a group of the council, management, and system as British council, IDP: Ielts Australia and other universities group like the Cambridge Assessment English.
This test was established in 1989, which was consist of two modules “General training” and “Academic”. But for the UK they carried out a special listening type test called Visas and Immigration. A person who is applying for this test must have skills listening, reading, writing and speaking in the English language. IELTS was accepted by all the Australian, Canadian, British, New Zealand and the Irish People. This test was mainly carried out for the people who want a visa for the acceptance of the authority of the immigrants.
Score System:
There is no minimum score to be applied for this test. They issued a test report from “Band 1” to “Band 9” depending on the threshold of each company. And those who did not attempt the test they were graded as “Band 0”. The institution that accept this IELTS exam does not accept or consider a report which is more than two years of old. In a near study, it was noticed that in 2017, 2 million tests being taken, 1.7 in 2011 and 1.4 million in 2009 making its popular test of English language for higher education.
History:
Actually, this test was under the British Council and was known as UCLES, Cambridge English Language Assessment for the growth of communicative language mainly reflected the use of this language in the ‘real world’. To have international participants IELTS revised its rules in 1995 where three major rules were being changed:
- Only one Academic Reading and writing module
- The thematic link between reading and writing to avoid confusion
- General training of reading and writing modules
Colleges in Canada use IELTS:
CIC or names as Citizenship and Immigration Canada checks or reviews to one’s ability to communicate English or French. To check these skills they also carried a test called TEF. There is another alternative of IELTS in Canada college ielts called the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Test. The CLBs, Canadian Language Benchmarks are national standards for recognizing and determining the English language in Canada for the immigrants. They needed certain scores in IELTS such as:
- Reading skill range from 3.5 to 8.0
- Writing range: 4.0 to 7.5
- Listening:4.5 to 8.5
- Speaking: 7.5 to 4.0
For Canadian citizenship, submitting IELTS score is like a proof of proficiency of official languages. A minimum CLB score of 4 is required by the universities that offered the IELTS test. The business start-up in Canada required a CLB of 5 and in trades 5 for listening and speaking and 4 for the writing and reading ones.
In Canada, top-ranked universities of Canadian college IELTS were enlisted by World University ranking where a minimum score of 6.5 is required along some also accept minimum marks of 6.0 in IELTS. So it always depends on university rankings for the minimum score required.
