Nicholas Copernicus, Isaac Newton, and Galileo were men who brought us our modern day understanding of Cosmology. To the entire world they were known as men of reason and science. Galileo is quoted as saying that where our senses fail us, reason steps in.
Were Copernicus, Isaac Newton, and Galileo Occult Magicians?
However, there seems to be a another side to these otherwise rational scientists. A side that paints a quite different picture than most history books reveal. For example, Galileo, though he was known to be a very careful and observant scientist, made astrological charts for rich people. Isaac Newton discovered gravity and gave the world calculus; however, he was also hailed as the last of the magicians. Although Nicholas Copernicus taught the world that the earth’s round, was heavily influenced by the wisdom of the great magicians, Hermes Trismegistus. Hermes started a movement called Hermeticism. Wikipedia states that Hermeticism is a religious, philosophical, and esoteric tradition based primarily upon writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus (“thrice-greatest Hermes”).
It seems, throughout history, many scientific geniuses such as these men have believed in completely fantastical things. They not only believed them, but in many cases credit their esoteric beliefs with helping them to unlock the mysteries behind many of their theories. For example, the theory of gravity was drawn from a magical principal called, the magic (law) of attraction. Witches believe that magic is a way of attracting lovers, bringing luck, banishing evil spirits, fortune and more. According to one witch, “Magic is something we use to help us get what we want or need.” Although these are bizarre ideas to the rational mind, having the benefit of hindsight today, we can see how this helped Newton to understand gravity. Without gravity humanity would be hard pressed to explain how people live on a sphere in the vacuum of space.
Europe and their colonial offshoots which, because they had a theistic foundation, taught that a rational creator made the world in an orderly way. Most people accept that it was these beliefs in rationalism that gave us men like: Isaac Newton, Galileo, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, etc. In other words, all of the geniuses we learned about in school. Yet, this worldview does not hold up to a decent scrutiny of history. Instead, these men often were just the opposite. Rather than to base their scientific discoveries in rational observation, they often turned towards the occult metaphysical world for answers. Surprisingly, however, it seems that in our modern day culture we are the last to know. Perhaps this is because we prefer to hang on to our rose colored glasses about science. Notwithstanding, most Christians believe these men are examples of the Christian influence of Europe and the West . However, if such Christians were willing to give up their slanted views about scientific discovery, they would see that real science is often based in magic.
