Removing Scratches From Your Car Paint The Easy Way

There’s no doubt that during the course of vehicle ownership your car will be subject to scrapes and dents. They’re unsightly and can be expensive to get repaired. But it doesn’t have to be for minor scratches to your car’s Paint. While there are many techniques on removing scratches from your cars paint, here’s one simple measure you can do from your home.

Shoe-polish and Sand Paper

First you need to apply shoe-polish into the scratch. Apply just a small amount onto a paper towel or a soft cloth and apply liberally to the paint to fill in the scratch. This allows the scratches to be seen easier, making the scratch easier to repair.

The next step is to sand over the scratch using using 2000 grit wet/dry sand paper or sanding block. It is critical to sand using using lots of water to ensure the sand paper has sufficient lubrication and clearing of paint filings. You can’t use too much water in this step, so wet the sandpaper regularly, or use a spray bottle to continuously keep the area wet. Continue to sand the area until all of of the shoe polish is no longer visible. When the shoe polish is no longer visible, this means you’ve sanded enough so surrounding paint or clear coat finish is now at the same depth of the scratch, essentially eliminating the scratch.

Get The Shine Back With Rubbing Compound

Now that the scratch itself has been removed, you’ll want to get the high gloss finish back by using a Rubbing Compound. While a polishing wheel helps, small scratches where this technique works only requires a clean cotton cloth and a bit of elbow grease to get the desired results. Keep rubbing close to the scratch as possible, using a moderate amount of rubbing compound, until you notice the dull finish from the sanding step completely gone and the area showing a consistent shine.

Wax On – Wax Off

Finally, you’ll want to give the area (and the entire car too) a good Carnauba Wax coating to protect the paint and give the area an extra shine. After the previous step, ensure all the rubbing compound has been removed by gently washing the area with water only, and drying with a soft cloth. Now follow the directions for the wax finish you choose and apply as directed. Now your scratch will be completely gone, leaving your paint job scratch free and looking better than new.

Automobile light paint scratch repair is straightforward enough to complete all on your own. You simply have to have the required materials on hand, and a willingness to tackle the job yourself.
