Book of Life: Voice Cast & Characters Guide

The Book of Life is a show which a lot of children and adults as well has enjoyed and loved. The story has introduced different characters whom several famous actors have voiced.

This story embodies the essence of the Mexican “Day of the Dead” tradition. Its backstories and design has brought this story to life. In 2014, both the director, Jorge R. Gutierrez and producer Guillermo del Toro has collaborated and created this amazing 3D fantasy adventure, The Book of Life. This movie got its inspiration from Day of the Dead celebration and has included some small details of it in the movie. Some of them have sugar skulls and elements of the Mexican culture. In fact, this movie included Mexican and Latino actors to voice the characters.

Voice Cast and Characters of the Book of Life

Diego Luna as Manolo Sanchez

Manolo is a bullfighter and a music lover. He actually came from a family of bullfighters which is why his father, Carlos, Hector Elizondo, was against his musical aspiration. One day, Manolo got tricked by Xibalba and when he died he was sent to the Land of the Remembered. He had to go through a lot of challenges in order for him to be able to return to the Land of the Living.

Diego Luna, brings Manolo to life through his voice. He sang songs I Love YouToo Much, I Will Wait and Creep.

Zoe Saldana as Maria Posada

Maria is voiced by Zoe Saldana. The character Maria shows the characteristics of compassion. She is very spirited and at the same time rebellious. Maria is the best friend and also love interest of Joaquin and Manolo which brings her into a love triangle. Though a lot of guys are trying to get her attention, she is not a type of girl who is damsel in distress. In fact, she could defend and stand up for herself.

As mentioned earlier, Zoe voiced Maria. Aside from this movie, Zoe was also part of Star Trek, Infinitely Polar Bear, MCU as Gamora and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Channing Tatum as Joaquin Mondragon Jr.

Joaquin, as mentioned earlier is Manolo and Maria’s best friend. He also has a love interest on Maria. When he was a child he was given a medal by Xibalba. This has made him a town hero. His character exudes the characteristics of friendliness, authoritativeness and easily influenced by those who are around him.

Channing Tatum who has voice Joaquin could also be seen on 21 Jump Street, Magic Mike and Foxcatcher. His voice was also used in other animated films including The Lego Movie.

Kate del Castillo as La Muerte

La Muerte is Xibalba’s wife. She is also the ruler of the Land of the Remembered. Both she and Xibalba made a bet on who will win Maria’s heart and her choice was Manolo. The reason as to why she has chosen Manolo is due to his kindness. She has tested Manolo once by being disguised as an old woman and Manolo gave her a piece of bread.

La Muerte is a goddess and a generous one. Though this is the case, she is a goddess who will not tolerate cheaters. La Muerte was brought to life with Kate del Castillo’s voice. She is a Mexican actress who is known for La Reina del Sur and Ingobernable.

Ron Perlman as Xibalba

As mentioned earlier, Xibalba is La Muerte’s husband. He is also the ruler of Land of the Forgotten. He is manipulative and gave Joaquin a medal and the ability to become invisible. He is not really evil but he is mischievous. His character is performed by Ron Perlman who has actually appeared in many del Toro’s films – Cronos, Blade II, Hellboy II:The Golden Army.

Ice Cube as Candle Maker

The Candle Maker is an immortal being who oversees the lives and stories of the living. He is cheerful and easygoing. He follows all the rules and he is change of keeping the balance between the Land of the Remembered and the Land of the Forgotten.
