Test for the first time assisted driving with 5G-V2X

As a result of the collaboration between Telefónica and Huawei, the first global proof of concept on communications for vehicles based on a 5G network has been carried out in Spain.

Telefonica and Huawei , who collaborate in communications at their Laboratory of Innovation 5G Conjunto de Madrid, have announced an achievement regarding Assisted Driving and 5G-V2X. This is, on one of the most relevant vertical applications that will enable the 5G.

As they have announced, they have already carried out the first proof of concept in the world on communications networks for vehicles that is based on 5G-V2X .

For this they have used the latest specifications of the 3GPP NR standard. And what would have been demonstrated is that the URLLC mode is capable of supporting the V2X application with more capacity and coverage than other technologies. With a coordinated fleet of trucks, all controlled by the 5G NR network, 99.999% reliability was achieved with a 1ms round trip delay , which is necessary for autonomous outdoor driving. It was also shown that the signaling header can be reduced by 67% compared to today’s cellular systems.

With the help of a novel auto-content frame scheme, the response to the transmissions is accelerated and the communications present very low latency.

“This proof of concept lays the foundations for the large-scale field tests that will have to be carried out in the next commercial deployments of the 5G mobile networks worldwide”, indicate their managers.

5G-V2X technology links advanced services such as sharing sensor information in vehicles in real time, driving fleets of trucks together, remote driving or Assisted driving, for example.

“The proof of concept on 5G-V2X is another joint effort to pave the way for the commercialization of 5G-based services , and is a solid foundation to realize our 5G vision,” said Wen Tong, Huawei Fellow and Wireless CTO of Huawei. , that would be “that allows a cooperative autonomous conduction” . On the other hand, Enrique Blanco, Global CTIO of the Telefónica group, declared that the test “is another step towards the commercialization of 5G and a totally connected society” .
